Excellent references...thanks whunter! That's NASTY!!!

1. Why does everyone clean these things instead of just chucking them when they're only 16 bucks a pop? I would say that the strainer in your preferred picture (shown above) would more than make the case for replacement, but are any of them worth cleaning? Is it a wire or cotton mesh?
2. Should one even bother with inspecting and/or cleaning the strainer if they're not having any trouble and can see no evidence of excessive crud in the pre-filter?
3. Also, what is your opinion of placing something like a WIX # 33011 paper element filter in front of the pre-filter to catch any crud when the algaecide is used?

As always, thanks for the advice!

Post Why ?

# 1. Because we're mostly working class schlubs and besides it's _designed_ to be cleaned and re-used ~ typical of German cars .

it is a plastic mesh and quite easy to remove , just a 46 MM socket and extension with ratchet does the job .

# 2. yes of course .

# 3. Use the WIX # 3001 , that's the same filtration only larger , the tiny # 3011 is for 4 cyl. air cooled VW's and clogs up quickly .

Thumbs up Biocide must be used to kill the algae...

Biocide must be used to kill the algae, or that new strainer will be plugged quick...

Hey Nate...

...I see the 1981 240D creampuff in your sig. This one is far from a "creampuff", but when you get a minute perhaps you could tell me whatchya think it's worth? I'm looking for one for my son and he thinks he wants an old MB diesel to play with (and even drive)...

And for the Record...

...I'm a working class schlub as well. You just wouldn't think so if you knew the irrational amount of time, money and effort I've devoted to this damn car...

on the creampuff

idea. i just sold two very nice 240ds which had very good but not perfect southern bodies and recent engine rebuilds, sticks, functioning ac, excellent interiors, recent bilstein shocks, front end work, and good or new michlein tires for 4575 and 4550.

if you could find one, a good one with a good original not rebuilt engine should be had for 3000 to 3500 i would think.

my son has one that he bought from me that he wants to sell. it is from ohio. it has a good body with some rust under the paint around the rear wheel openings, very good interior, exceelent mechanics and working ac. he was asking 4500 but might take less. his name is andrew. 765 532 5830. it has somewhere areound 200k on it. very sound motor with minimal blowby.

Where does all the black goop come from

After running disgusting used vegetable oil and gasoline for a few months, my strainer was clean.

Diesel looks clear when you pour it, but...yuck

Post 240D Value ?

I may be the wrong guy to ask as I'm a junkyard jhonny and here in Los Angeles these things are nearly free .

I paid $1,500.00 for mine , '81 240D with 230,000 miles , new radiator , battery , alternator & four new tires , owner's booklet in the glove box , original toolkit in the aparently never used trunk ice cold , freshly serviced AC and so on ~

I had to do simple tune up and detail it , I only wish my 300CD was anything like it .

I tried to read the ' Diesel value ' thread but ran out of time , apparently cosmetics and location (in that order) are what set the resale value .

I'd pay maybe up to $1,800.00 for that car there depending on how it ran and the interior as the exterior will obviously clean up to as new easily .

Used car lot price ? under $3,500.00 anywhere in So. Cal. maybe under $2K .

I know of a good Canadian 300D for $3,500.00 near me , remains unsold after a year as it's tired , runs O.K. and all but weak cosmetics and the boob is too cheap to $pend and have it detailed ~ the _key_ to selling any car for more than junk price in L.A. we offered him $3K but he refused ~ stupid little man .

I hope this helped..

Nate:

You were pretty much right on the money as the car ended up selling for $1,802.77, which is about $250 more than I was willing to pay...

Thanks,
-Ken
