Jumpy on the get go....

Today i started up my car and as usually it kicks and sputtters a bit before smoothing out (particularly in this cold 22 degree weather). But, it was on the on ramp on the highway that I had problems. As I accelerated the car started jumping back and forth in terms of acceleration. Lots of blackish brown smoke was behind me and I couldnt kick into the higher gear for a few seconds. After that incident it ran fine. What was wrong here? I know my vaccuum levers on the linkage are worn down a bit, but could it could it possibly be my injectors are a little clogged? I just changed my fuel filters. I really want to fix this before it gets real cold.

I also must say that i do have a leak on my transmission, but I keep it topped off quite consistently. The reason I think it might be fuel delivery system related is the smoke. Is it possible it is an air leak (I do get tiny foamy bubbles in the prefilter while the engine is running)?

It sounds like you have an air leak someplace before the filter. I would check for cracks, lose clamps, etc. in the entire line.

GP Controller...

If you have the money the newer GP copntroller is really great at smoothing out startups. I put one in each of my cars and I may occasionally get a slight hiccup but that's it.
You could also have a bad GP and that wil cause the rough idle at startup.

I have also noticed that if you do not ream the GP holes when installing new plugs they seem to lose some fo their effectiveness very shortly after changing them.

I just changed my glowplugs a few weeks ago, but didnt ream the holes. Would that still cause a cause the jumpiness (please excuse the nomenclature) about 10 mins after startup when I first really start accelerating?

No, the GPs will only effect engine performance immediately after starting. I still think your problem is an air leak. Your "tiny foamy bubbles in the prefilter while the engine is running" have to be due to air leaking into the fuel system.
