How do you ream glow plug hole?
I searched and read a lot of talk stating you should ream glow plug holes but never could find exactly what this entails? I stuck a drill bit in the hole and twisted. Do I actually want to scrape hard around the sides to get carbon off. Where/what is this carbon building up on to make my car not start? I thought that the glow plug tips protruded into open space where they would help ignite fuel air mix so i do not understand the carbon build up problem.
thanks, p.s. It was in 40s the last weeks so 81 300D car started fine. I had replaced all glow plugs and adjusted valves. It ran great with tightened valves. I was waiting for cold to see if i would need to take further action This morning at about 28F , I had the same old problem -- took 45 minutes of cranking before it would start.. Now to the further action -- 1) ream glow plug holes 2) Watch plug get red hot despite apparent function of relay (voltage at all pugs fo 45 seconds) 3)fuel star of delivery. 4) starter (it really is unhappy) . Can anyone suggest anything else? |

j/w, but have you done a compression test?
I think I have poor compression or glow plugs, because mine refuses to start when its below 30*F (4.45*C) Its not really a problem for me right now, because I dont ever plan on driving it during the winter. BUT it is a liability, because if theres an emergancy we only have one car (allbeit brand new... but brand new GM ) ~Nate

If you ever want to invest the time and the eight bucks it requires to buy a 27mm deep socket, you can pull all of your injectors, turn on your key, and get one heck of a view of how they work. Looks like a string of Christmas lights. They heat the air in the prechamber near the injector.

Not glow plugs
Hi. I had almost the same problem. I found that I hand over adjusted my intake valves. They were off by .5 and the car would not start. I then re-did the job and found the falut and the car started at 18 deg. with out a problem. Just my 2 cents.

Progress .

Once I felt the first bit plunge through, the how to was pretty evident. I am still lacking in specifics. So i effectively opened the holes up by about 3/32 of an inch to probably 9/32 total diameter. I put electrical tape around drill bits so they cuold not go beyond where a glow plug tip would. Is this sufficient? I did not blow the holes out before reinstallin plugs because i forgot . Plus my battery was pretty dead and it may not of done the trick. Another thing was i had to bend the 1/4 bit making it short enough to get by the oil filter housing. The car would not start still in the cold. |
