Unhappy HOW do you attach the Resevoir to the Master Cylinder??

We're up to the point where we have to attach the new brake fluid resevoir to the master cylinder, and BOY is that a BEAR. We can't get it on, we tried multiple grommet positions, and different ways, but it just won't go on. Do we have to hire a gorilla???

Is there a trick to getting this thing to pop into those rubber grommets easier? I put the whole climate control together and the MC on the booster today, attached the lines, and now need to put the resevoir on so I can get to bleeding it and finishing the last couple things, then it can DRIVE again.

Help!!!

Install

#1. Lock the Master Cylinder in a vice.
#2. Install the grommets into the Master Cylinder.
#3. Lubricate the inside of both grommets with brake fluid.
#4. Lubricate the outside of the reservoir nipples with brake fluid.
#5. Insert reservoir nipples into both grommets.
#6. with a side to side rocking motion press down.
#7. Do NOT stop until it is fully seated.

A binder strap and a short pair of 2X4s can act as a gorilla, but you risk breaking the reservoir if it binds at an angle.

You may want to be careful when doing this as you probably do not want any in your brake fluid, but spray silicon works wonders for things like this. The grommets should be tight so there is no leak. When I am stuck trying to get rubber/plastic to slide together, I go for the spray silicon.

Thanks
David

Thanks! We didn't try rocking it, we were trying to go straight down into it, wasn't working too well.

I'll do that tomorrow and hopefully then be able to bleed it and finish up. Yay!!!

Thumbs up

I need new MS + reservoir as the lil plugs on top leak. At times the pedal hits the floor.

Boy that sounds safe!!!

BTW that doesn't nessisarily mean the MS needs to be completely replaced. I would get a re-sealing kit and just fix it up. Do the inside seals while you are at it too and enjoy a nice new ms

How much do you want for that 240d? Is it in good shape?

I think I may be looking for one of those in the spring or summer, I'd love to have a manual 240 as an extra car.

Seriously, you may have the wrong parts!

I have done that 5 or 6 times on Mercedes, and they just pop right in! Did someone sell you the wrong master cylinder? How easy was the reservoir to remove? If the master cylinder's are the same, check the rubber grommets. You can reuse the old ones if you have a mismatch. Otherwise go get some Vaseline to help you lubricate the pop in.

Nope we're reusing the existing M/C that was on the car....and we had to buy a new resevoir (its the right one though) as we destroyed the old one getting it off.....this one seems to have a Very, very, tight fit. With rocking and brake fluid lubrication it should go in though, it will be tried this evening to see....
