A strange discovery

While looking for the radiator drain under my 240D I noticed a LARGE bolt (about 7 inches long, 12 mm shaft and 18mm head) stuck between part of the suspension and the engine block below the injection pump. I pulled it out and looked around but can't seem to find a place that it was missing form. Anybody have any ideas where it goes? I hope who ever dropped it here replaced it.

Just a thought...somebody changed the idle arm bushing (& bolt) and just stuck the old bolt there. Does it show any wear? Isn't that bolt about that size?

I don't suppose that someone is playing mind games with you are they? You should be able to see where a bolt that big came from. (Damn. Ended a sentence with a preposition again. Please don't tell my wife.....)

I second that that idler arm bolt is pretty massive. Or what about an upper or lower control arm bolt?

"7" in length??

I hope not."

Well harrump then, the longer head bolts are only a tad over 5.5" long. nener, nener LOL

I looked in my nut & bolt box and found a 7" bolt, trouble is don't know where on a 616 its from, think is from the AC bracket tho, like Wasuchi suggested.

We need more info

It's just a standard hex-head. There doesnt seem to be any serious wear on the bolt, but there are two rings worn slightly smooth about 1/2 and 1 and 1/2 fron the head of the bolt. Here is a picture.

Wasuchi and stevo win the prize. Upon further inspection the AC compressor is missing a bolt. What should I torque it to?

Since you guys are on a roll...any of you have any advice on how to get my rounded off and frozen oil drain plug off?

Definitely not a head bolt.

Maybe the a/c or alternator or one of the control arm bolts.

The mounting bolts are torqued to 60Nm +/- 10NM.

You may have to loosen the 2 other bolts to get this one in. Then tension the belt and tighten all 3 bolts.

here is the parts diagram of the bolts, washers and spacers.
