i'm not 100% sure, but i'd say its something to do with the egr, as in egr valve, if its 81 or newer (i believe) someone else want to chime in with the right answer??

It is a temperature triggered vacuum valve. When the coolant gets to a certain temp, it closes the EGR by cutting vac to it, I'm pretty sure thats what it does. *mine doesn't* As I disconnected and sealed all vac lines to the egr.

Actually the one with the black electrical wire attached, is the temperature sensor for the engine temp guage.
The unit next to it that has the 2 blue tubes sticking out of it is the EGR temperature switch. Dave

This is the interlock temp sensor for the CCU (climate control unit). If it fails, your heat will not come on unless you use the highest most settings first then back down to what you want. It is supposed to sense when the engine is warm and thus flip on the heat. Trust me...I know what it is...I've used it to control my glow plug circuitry to do special stuff... BTW the engine temperature sensor for the GAUGE is in the side of the head...near the glowplugs. |

The interlock temp sensor, does it have an "official" mb name so I can order the correct part? My heat behaves exactly like this, max it out and it'll come on, then more or less regulate itself after that.
Thank much.

Does impact the climate control
When doing my last valve adjustment, I found the wire was brittle and broke at the sensor end. I reinforced the wire with heat shrink wrap and resoildered (sp?) the sensor end and my last niggling Climate Control issue was fixed!
For some reason - it talks to the climate control - that's all I can tell you.
