Hard to start back up

My car dosen't like to start back up if it's been less than about 15min since I shut it down. I have to hold the starter down for about 10 sec, and it slowly winds up. My friend tells me that that's the case with all these cars. Is that so, or is there somethin wrong with it? Is it bad to force it to start back up when it's dosen't want to?
