Talking Cops pulled me over today

I got pulled over today on my way home. Lately with the Super Bowl in Detroit they have stepped up traffic enforcement to make a 9 million dollar quota for Oakland county. Anyway I got pulled over because apparently I look too young to be driving an MB. Then he yelled at me for smoking excessively out the tail pipe and my reply was "Its a diesel!". Overall he was pretty cool and liked the car and we ended up talking for a few minutes. I think he just wanted to see the car.

Get used to it. I got pulled over on average twice a month between the ages of 16 and 25. Most of the times the cops didn't really have a good reason. The dumbest reason was my blinker only blinked twice before changing lanes and supposedly the law says it has to blink 3 times. The most I got pulled over was 3 times in a day (about 4 hours to be exact). Cops like to profile younger people. Most of the time I didn't deserve to be pulled over, sometimes I did, and other times I should have.

I must say, if you are young and driving a 1980's MB, getting pulled over must be a feat. With mine, I cant speed even if I wanted to.

OR, maybe he wanted to see what you had IN the car.

Years ago when I worked at a criminal law firm in Dallas, we had a client who was pulled over in an old M-B 240D ('77, I think)...the cops gave "excessive black smoke from the tailpipe of the vehicle" as the reason for pulling him over. The real reason was he was an African-American kid over in Highland Park near SMU. Unfortunately he had over 5 lbs. of pot in the trunk, as he was making a few 'deliveries' to the frat houses in that area. Anyway, at the suppression hearing, the judge agreed the stop was pretextual, and the pot was suppressed, so he essentially walked (albeit with a long lecture from the judge). He got rid of the car, though--it wasn't suited for his line of work, I suppose. Besides, he needed money to pay his nice lawyers.

Sounds like your cop was a 'good cop.'

Valve adjustment and a mix of Amsoil Cetane Boost and StarTron Diesel Additive has virtually eliminated all smoke from my cars. I can only see a little from the 240D when I'm flooring it and there's headlights right behind me, otherwise there's no visible smoke.

Well, in 10 years, when you're 60, you won't even think twice about those lights.

I've never been pulled over in over 2.5 years of driving (yet), but just the other night I was yet again "tailgated" by one of the "East Grand Rapids" (aka, rich zone) cops. I was sitting at at a light right in the middle of East GR and he comes up all the sudden RIGHT behind me, probably only inches away! And sits like that for the whole light, so when it goes green I sloooooooowwwwlllllyyy made my way to 24-25mph.... And he followed me like that all the way to where I turned 4 blocks away to go into the campus drive. They ALWAYS do that to me (and probably others), they ride your rear and try to intimidate you. If I had had to suddenly stop from something in the road he'd have been all over my bumper. Always nice having those cops around promoting accidents.

Last night was cop-city around here, usually I see one or none on my way to school, but I saw FOUR last night. One clocking people, two just driving around, and the one that tailgated me. Jeeze.

If the police stopped me and stated the resaon for the stop as "suspicious driving/smoke out the tail pipe" I would go off on them.

First I would hand them my registration and say I am the registered owner. Second I would inform them that I am DEQ exempt. Then I would politely ask the question, "Are we done here?"

And then I would drive away.

But then again, I have had some bad experinces with very shady police...I have a copy of the oregon state traffic/transportation laws on my comptuer and have read everything applicable.

I got pulled over once for doing an Italian tune up in the center of town. About 41 or so in a 25. I said I was sorry, he said my car was pretty nice and gave me a warning!

I can't see getting bothered because of age. Their are a lot of 20 year olds that drive late model MB's, BMW's, whatever. M3's are very popular.
