I am going through the same issue. I had the surging and CEL light. SO far I have cleaned the manifolds and flaps. I checked the flaps with a Mighty Vac to make sure they werent leaking. I replaced the Y31/1 transducer for the EGR and the glow plugs. After assembly she started right up. Now though I have a CODE P0200 which has about 6 different variations. AllData is stating that only 2 of those will cause the CEL on second start, all the other possible causes will pitch the error right away. I pulled the crossover pipe the other day and checked the connections and vacuum lines. Interesting thing since I have put this back together I can barely get to 4500RPMs where as previously with the surging I could get it all the way to 5000RPMS. Any thoughts? before I head to dealer. BTW its a 1997 E300D 178,000 miles.. One thing i did notice while idling the timing chain is noisy and when I shut her down there is a little slack in the chain.

Maybe it's time to inspect the timing chain. Did you make sure the flaps rotate with ease?
michakaveli, what do you mean by EGR yes, CCV no? The CCV is there for emission control as well.

I am going to get the chain and tensioner adjuster checked. I did check for free movement of the flaps by using the mighty vac and both worked freely and make contact with the Y/35 switch. I am guessing the changeover valve is not functioning or I broke a wire somewhere along the way.

How did you do the CCV ? I will be working on the car this weekend and would like to do the MODS at that time. I live in Florida and have no issues with inspections .Thanks, Alex

Okay, here is the update for this weekend. After going to Costco, Walmart, Autozone, NAPA, Pep Boys, and Discount, I finally found where to buy Mobil 1 Truck and SUV on Saturday, Bennett Auto Supply. I also went to pickup all the filters, Diesel Purge, and transmission fluid from my local Benz parts house. I went to the dealer to order a couple of intake manifold gaskets, when I found out that my car had the old style transmission that is not the sealed type, 722.6.I guess that is both good and bad at the same time. The guy in the parts department told me that I should not use synthetic transmission fluid in my car, that it would damage the transmission. Is this true? I did not want to risk it so I used Valvoline dextron 3 instead. Anyway, I was able to change the oil and do the transmission service only, due to spending time with my boys. I did take the car to my buddy's tire shop where he is the Manager to have the tires rotated and balanced, I also re-check the CEL, and he said that the EGR is not bad, but is malfunctioning due to probably the flaps in the intake. The TPS also came up, but I believe that it is due to the flaps also. I will try to do the flaps soon. He did clear the CEL with his scanner, but it came back on as soon as I got back home. I will keep you guys posted when I finish cleaning the intake and flaps to resolve the CEL.

You could also use DELVAC 1. Same exact thing.
Do you have an actual dipstick? If so, you might be right about the "not sealed" part. However, I have a 722.6 myself and use the MB fluid. That would be what I recommend. It is synthetic. They said it was a lifetime fill but I felt better dropping the pan at 69K. The fluid was not burnt but it was darker than the fresh fluid. Also lets me see how much tranny debris was floating around.

Do the later transmissions not have a dipstick? Mine does and I don't know what I would do without it.
I don't see any reason why synthetic shouldn't be used in any transmission.

Some Mercon III trannies don't do well with Mercon V fluid in them. That being said, Amsoil makes a Mercon, Mercon V rated fluid that is fine to use in either tranny.

I could not even find the Delvac1, but do you know if Mobil1 synthetic tranny fluid has Mercon V? Maybe that is why he told me not to use it in my 722.4 transmission(with dipstick). Alex
