What type of motor oil to use

I have a 1989 Mercedes 190D,260,000KM DIESEL,What type of engine oil should I use?Should only oil marked for DIESEL oil be used for the engine or can engine oil for gas engines also be used? What is the difference from a Diesel oil and oil for gas engines? My Mercedes dealer uses the same oil for both diesel and gas engines at oil changes but it is Syntetic oil they use. Will regular diesel oil work for this car or should I use syntetic oil?Confused.

Oil

I have a 1991 350SD ....I use conventional oil 15w-50
I also have a 1999 e300td. In that car I use w5-40 synthetic oil.

Only use oil specified for diesels
Gasoline engine oils are designated with SG or SH (and now, SJ). Diesel engine oil is designated with CD, CD-II, CE, CF, CF-2, CF-4, or CG-4. Some oils are rated for both gasoline and diesel applications, others are not. For example, an oil with a designation of SJ/CG-4 may be used in both gasoline and diesel engines in light trucks. For diesels, ratings are based upon service applications.
Again give Mercedes a call ....to see what is correct for your specific application

You will be MUCH better served by using an oil especially formulated for diesels. These are the oils that the truckers use. The three most common and readily available are: Shell Rotella T, Mobil Delvac or my favorite Chevron Delo 400.

These oils are MUCH better formulated due to the additives that help control soot dispersal. Oils blended for gas engine use do not have these additives and many of the latest gas engine oils do not have the additives used for friction reduction which is needed for your diesel.

These are good oils for many gas engines as well. The only exceptions are a few of the modern engines that require a lighter weight oil.

My original 240D engine went 380,000 miles on Delo 400. It's hard to argue with that. My 300E is at 288,000 and counting with no oil usage and all it has had is Delo 400.

Any of those type oils with an SH4 Plus classification will serve you well in your diesel.

Good luck,

Depends on what kind of driving you do. If its allot of city driving a synthetic would be best (M1 or Amsoil). If its highway driving a synthetic may not be worth the extra $

If you dont have anything to do for the next couple weeks check the archives for "oil" threads
