Exclamation 4.0 V8 engine reliability and maintenance

Based on your experience, what can you say about the reliability of the all-aluminum and common-rail 4.0 liter V8 diesel engine found on '01 W220 S400CDi?

Can the oil, oil-filter, air filter and diesel filter be easily changed in this engine by an rookie-DIY'er?

From what I've seen they are still pretty easy as far as changing fluids. There have been a few threads here of complaints of smoking, low power and a really nasty noise at startup in an ML400 CDI. (If you want an MP3 of that ML400 e-mail me and I will send it to you.)

Wow, that engine sounded sick and anemic... Compared to a 617 anyways, with the nice...."truda trudaaavrrmmmm...." startup sound.

The bass sound put out by a 617 is greatness.... It just sounds "tough".

I'd kill to get one on this side of the pound. For some reason MB keeps all the best models in Europe.

Me too. I'd not mind dropping a sprinter 2.7 I5 cdi and tranny into my SD though, that'd be pretty awesome. 179hp and 260lbs of torque? Sounds good!

Interesting... I've heard before someone mention that lack of power in this engine.

What could be the cause of this? Electronics? One dead piston?

In good order it should be about as fast as an S430. S430's are not slow, they move right along.

One thing to be carefull about with the early W220's is the air suspension. If the shocks or other various parts are leaking it can get expensive to correct. Every part is $1k and to revamp the whole system is $10k. Got to love air suspension, reminds me of the old 6.3's.

Also make sure everything works, computer problems can get pricey fast.

Other then that they are very good cars. They are nice drivers, very easy to park.

My dad has wanted to get a a new CDI but I have told him to wait. Is anything other than the I6 going to be available Stateside? The MB dealers have been denying any other models becoming available.

The I6 is old news. I think the 07's have the V6.

I'd opt for the I6 it is a proven engine the V6 is brand new.

I keep hearing that an S320CDI is coming down the pipe line.

I'm not sure how long he'd want to wait. Afterall he's in his 70's now.

If he is buying new why even bother. They have a warranty so who cares if it breaks it is MB's problem. When the warranty expires trade up. I think it is 4 year or 50k miles for the standard, of course this can be extended greatly.

It looks like the new V6 will do pretty well. At least for 100,000 miles.
