240D 3.0T Dyno run

I've got an appointment set for 9am (Monday, 2/13/06) at CarZ Custom in Denver. For $85 I get 3 runs with minor adjustments allowed between runs.

Here is how I am planning on using those runs:
1: No ALDA signal. I'll plug the boost line to the ALDA for no enrichment. (It will also serve as a warm-up for the normal run)
2: Normal run. Start at 2000rpm, the same rpm I started with my 300TD and auto tranny.
3: Lug down. Full power applied at around 1200rpm.

Here are my specs:
Car- 1980 240D 197,700 miles.
Engine- OM617.95x 1984 300SD block and internals, 1982 300TD head and camshaft 320K miles.
Transmission- Stock 4-speed manual, dampened single clutch.
Driveline- Stock driveshaft, 3.69 diff.
Wheels/tires- 205/60R15 alloy rims (560SEL)
Misc- Fuel used will be Diesel #2 (No winterized/#1 cr@p here!), ALDA set at max, boost is 12.5psi, KKK K26 turbo, external throttle linkage stop on IP raised 4mm, no internal IP adjustments, redline at 5000rpm, Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W40 synthetic oil, best 0-60 time: 15.1 seconds, average MPG:20.5.

Any ideas or comments? I'll post a graph as soon as I get back home.

How in the world can you start at 2000RPM with an auto tranny without damaging it or blowing the torque converter apart??

Looks like a manual tranny.

2000rpm was the lowest I could floor it without the auto tranny downshifting into 3rd.

Thumbs up

Maybe we'll see more than 90rwhp.

I was able to get 87.2rwhp last time in my automatic TD. Randy got 79rwhp in his auto 300TD.

I may be 5000ft higher but I am still expecting 92-98rwhp. The 3.69 vs 3.07 diff WILL cause a difference in output measured, I'm guessing in the 3-4hp and 25-30ft-lb torque range.

How are you only getting a tad over 20mpg with that stickshift?

Thinking the high diff ratio is hurting or?

Just curious...I'll be watching

I've never gotten good milage. No clue why. It runs well, good power, no black smoke. TD or 240D. 17.25 was my worst milage

My car must be rev-happy, even if I am going over 45-50mph and press the pedal too far (as far as it goes ) to accelerate, it will do a super quick, super firm, drop to 3rd, haul like nothing else to as high as 80, then drop back to 4th....its pretty awesome...

That's not right; there must be a problem with the odometer.

well yikes! of course

the 369 is hurting him. he needs a 307 in there if he wants to increase his mileage. the bigger engine pumps more air and fuel each time it turns a revolution so of course it will use more fuel. being turboed increases the fuel used too. with a 307 rear in there and a four speed he should be able to get in the high 20s. with my non turbo 300 stick i got 30 going 75. a turbo will be a little less effecient on fuel at the same rpm, i predict.

course with the 308 you wont be burning rubber on takeoff. but it will be serene at highway speeds.

But Tom, I believe he said that engine was getting crappy mileage in both the TD and in the 240. Lance's TD should have had a 3.07 in it.

For the record, the best economy I've ever achieved from my wagon (617.952 w/4-spd manual and 3.07 final drive) was 28.9mpg and it's more often in the 25s. My 300D (617.952 with auto and 2.88s) routinely gets 26 to 27 town/hwy mix.

That's right, mt TD had a 3.07 rear end. It never had an odometer/speedo so I've only got the low 20's # from calculating the average miles I did a week. On average, I would run 280 miles a week and get 7-9 days on the 16.5 gallon tank before the reserve light came on.

No doubt the 3.69 is only making a bad problem worse, but I don't "burn rubber" everywhere I go. I shift between 2500-3000rpm on average and cruise between 60-70 on the rare chance I use the highway.

I'd be as happy as a rat in a cheesecake factory if I could get into the mid-20's! Low 30's just seems like a wet dream right now.

well

if his odo didnt work in the td we don't know what he actually was getting, do we? in my experience a td with turbo will get in the low to mid twenties at 700' above sea level. those of you who live in denver will do a lot better.

and i didnt mean to say you actually ARE buring rubber all the time, just that it will be harder to do so with the 307.

going to the 307 will increase your economy by about the exact amount of the gear change. so it is about 20%. if you are getting 20 with the 369 you will prob get 24 with the 307. although unless you are driving pretty fast or have other issues i would expect you to be able to creep above 25 on the highway.
