Electrical Challenge (Who's Up For It?) W124 1987 300D
What started off as a simple change of my Outside Temperature LCD Display has turned into a nightmare! HELP!!!
My LCD has never worked since I owned the vehicle for the past 2 years, it appears as if it has been struck/cracked. So a few weeks back I decided to replace it, so I took out the dash to find out it was a 4 Pin and went on a scavenger hunt. I located a 5 Pin on EBay which after doing some research through the treads found out that it would work with a Pigtail from the dealer. So long behold my item arrived and the Pigtail was bought. I reconnected the wires: 1 to 1 2 to 2 3 to 3 4 to 4 And ta-da…all I got was the light bulb to light up and no temperature was displayed. So back I went to reading more threads, and found someone who had the same problem: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=55051&highlight=temperature+display+pin The recommendation there was: 1 to 5 2 to 1 3 to 3 4 to 2 and hall sensor to 4 (if available). NOW THE FUN BEGINS!!! When I was doing this change I heard a “click”, only to find out that I’ve blown some fuses. # 2 & # 9 fuses both blew, I can’t say for certain, but I must have touched some wires. So I replaced the one RED and one WHITE fuse. Once I connected everything and tried the LCD in the new arraingment, I got no difference. BUT INSTEAD I GOT THIS GIFT: When I open the drivers or front passengers door, the SRS light comes on and stays on for approx. 5 sec. AND the radio comes on. When I close the door the radio goes off and so does the SRS light. This is all w/o the key in the ignition. When I move the key to the ON position the SRS never comes on and the radio works fine. Anyone with any ideas PLEASE HELP…I checked the relays by the fuses and all work fine…The bottom of the two door contacts is what causes this mystery to turn on. I wired the LCD back to the way it was with the 4 Pin and still experience the horror! |

Just to report back to anyone with interest:
Turned out to be the Diode under the Fuse Box. As it was sending current in reverse, causing most items on fuse 2 & 9 to go crazzy. (Later all noticed that this fault in the Diode caused the power window swtich to kill the radio power) The w124 Service Manual is the one of your best friends for electronic resources. |

so here's the question: where, exactly, is the diode? I've got the same thing going on with mine.
