Effect of Running on Wrong Oil?

The 82 300sd I just bought had a reciept in the glove box for an oil change with 10w30 oil. I know that this isn't the correct oil for a diesel, so I drained it and replaced it, but could there be any damage that was done to the engine from running this weight of oil?

oil again...

10w-30 is not the proper weight for your application ......You need an oil that meets CF-4 or CG-4 API classification...Go to http://www.whnet.com/4x4/ theres a link to the correct oil for your car....
Regular oil ....??? not to sure if it did any damage.....

Summer oil Vs winter oil

At my shop, we have alot of diesel impliments, a air compressor a Chev diesel dek truck, we change oil regularly, but as winter sets in we switch from 15W40 to 10W40....is this wise? does it help starting? or is it BAD?

The only problem with using the xW-20/30 oil is it's not ment for diesel. Diesel oil is built to handle the soot and combustion deposits dumped into it. And there is not really a wrong weight of oil. I've seen CF-4 oils in 5W40, 15W40, 15W50. Just don't go extreme and use something like 0W20!

How about this.

A couple of months ago I scored up about 30 gallons of free 20W50 when I picked up a free oil pump off of CL. I was saving it for Summer as I know winter is a bit cold for that and my truck and MB would hate me for it on these cold mornings we've been having. I think this week is going to be the last cold week (I sure hope so) Portland weather is a bit off this year......but the question is, I'm do for an oil change about 300 miles ago but was going to wait till after this last cold snap to put this in and try it. If it seemed to want to punch me in the face (Here I am humanizing my cars again) I would just drain it out and put some delo 15-40 back in.

What is your thoughs on this? To heavy yet?

Addicted, do you use a block heater? If you do, and can plug it in at both ends of your commute, then yes, you can make it work.

Well,

On the MB I do and I'm and most of the time I'm not stopped long enough for my block to cool all the way down.

As for the truck though no.

I doubt that any damage was done. Opinions on oil are rampent and highly varied. All dino oil stinks anyway. Use synthetic for a long life. (the car not yours)

Buy something antiquated like an old British motorcycle or a Harley (not the latest v twin) in order to use your 30 gal. 20/50.
Don't put it in your Merc.

I don't think non-diesel rated 20/50 oil will hurt your Benz, BUT, it won't carry much soot. I would not run it more than 2-3K miles before you dump it.
