Wouldn't some heavy duty duct-tape along the crack seal it up? Just adding some red-green style ideas....

Personally I'd probably use JBweld....it seems to work on anything from our experiences here.....smear a layer of it across the crack, then spray paint it chrome or something (once it has long-dried)

Try www.car-part.com
You might even find a place near you that will have it and save shipping charges.

cracked cover

Mine is too!!! Same crack. Must be a weakness of design. Mine's not leaking oil though. I didn't do anything to it.

Torquing bolts too tight

I think MBz specifications call for torqueing the bolts on the valve cover relatively lightly, like 11 ft-lbs. Overtightening or tightening unevenly could cause distortion leading to a crack, especially in a piece of old aluminum.

They are not too hard to find in junk yards or on Ebay.

Ahhh.. car-part was the site I remember.

My valve cover crack seemed only to be seeping a tiny bit of oil. I JB Welded it last night, and found another crack after cleaning the rest of the valve cover. Argh.

What years/models can interchange with the '84 300D?

I'm pretty sure the valve cover from all the 617's will fit, excluding one from a wagon engine with the leveling pump, not sure on that, maybe it would. Anyways, probably almost all 617 valve covers. At the very least any cover from an engine in a 1980-85 300SD, 300D, 300CD or 300GD

So then what's up with my buddy's '84 300SD having this weird black box on top of his valve cover? I think it has those transmission/vacuum related doodads in it. Is mine supposed to have that?

It's easy to replace those parts with those off of your own engine. As far as I know, all the valve covers from turbos (and I think the 617 non-turbos), including those from the 300TD with level control, should be interchangable. I KNOW FOR CERTAIN that the one from a 1985 300D is interchangable with that from a 1983 300SD.
