1986 190D Greetings

Greetings,
New to your forum.
If all works out I will be picking up a one-owner, dealer maintained 1986 190D with 148K miles on it next week . I will start reading diligently about any issues common to this somewhat scarce 5 cylinder diesel. The one big change the car will get right away is a dose of Biodiesel and maybe a fuel filter change.
Look forward to any advice you may have.

Welcome!

Buy extra filters (primary and secondary) because, if you dose it with biodiesel, you'll definitely be changing filters.

Welcome Kevin. Good to have you around. Many folks here will have many answers for your 190D. I won't be one of them, but have test driven an '87 190D and really really liked it. It needs a tranny rebuild, and paint is fading, but I think with a good tranny I would rather have it than my wagon.
Post pics of your 190 when you get it. Sounds like a nice car....

Thanks,
Just picked it up today and will go over it and see what may need to be done…so far looks like A/C and cruse control are out. Has a brand new battery, but the radio is out as a result. The lady I bought it from said I would have to take it to the MB dealer to have it reset. Is that true?

I have a 1986 190D as well.

After the third time going back to a repair shop to have my radio reset, I finally pulled out the stock radio and put in an aftermarket replacement. Disconnecting the battery will disable the stock radio, so any time you need to do electrical work, it's going to happen.

I do really like the car, despite its idiosyncracies (sp?).

if you call the dealer with your vin number they will give you the magic code. write it down in your owners manual and you are all set.
