APCOAIR ac compressor clutch replace 83 300SD
I just removed my clunking clutch on the APCOAIR AC compressor
on the 1983 300SD. Anyone ever done this ? Looking for advice on where to get replacement parts and any re-install tips. I did remove it with compressor in car, system fully charged. Really did not want to dis-charge and recharge system. It runs so good, and so cold.

The problem with replacing just the clutch is identifying the copressor. Many versions of the GM R4 compressor will interchange. Unfortunately the clutches don't necessarily do the same.
Best chance is to find a cooperative AC Delco joober close by and take your parts in and match them up. New R4 compressors are so cheap it's really self defeating to replace just a clutch. You will spend a considerable percentage buying the clutch and many of the clutches go due to leaking front seals.

Will any standard GM R4 compressors work ?
I found the APCOAIR company and one of their dealers.
The replacement clutch is available for $195USD. Before I go that route I want to know if anybody knows of a standard GM R4 compressor that might work. I see a lot of compressors for 80's GM vehicles like trucks and camaros that look identical. Can I use any of these to replace the MB unit ?

Yeh. I am looking at a whole new (not rebuilt) compressor with clutch
for not much more. I am really pleased with how the current system is charged and did not want to crack it open. Opening the system involves: 1. Collecting the existing freon (special equipment). 2. probably replacing receiver/drier (good practice). 3. Evacuating system (vaccum pump and some time). 4. Recharging system. So, just because of the clutch bearing I am now going to do all the above. A local shop agreed to evacuate and recharge for labor only of $100. Not bad, he even said I could bring my own freon for the recharge. I was very surprised, but I live in a small town. Otherwise his freon was $45USD a pound. Seemed kinda steep. I might be able to borrow a recovery system, harbor freight has a vacuum pump, I have the gauges for recharging. Just happen to have a new receiver/drier on the shelf. So I might get by for the cost of the compressor. And the time to do it.
