R12 - Anybody got a can or two they don't need?
I don't want to go through the hassle of taking the test to buy a couple of cans of R12 for my '64, it just needs to be topped up and I have the hose with connector already from days past...if anyone has some they don't need or just want to sell please contact me by PM. Thanks.

The test is a whopping $15 at www.imaca.org. It's open book and I did the whole thing in about 30 minutes.

Yes. I bought some small cans at the auto parts store a couple years ago. They don't have it on the shelves; you have to ask for it. When I asked, the kid at the counter didn't even know what R12 was. The manager overheard me explaining, and said it was kept in his office. He took a peek at my card, had me sign some sort of sales register, and away I went.

My car needs 1 can a year. I usually get it at NAPA for $34 + tax. I just bought 3 14 oz. cans and a 4 oz. oil charge on eBay for $57 shipped! You just have to email them a scan of your EPA cert.

Yes, many car parts stores carry them still, and they look at people with the EPA license is AC pros. They are either old stock or they can still import them under licence for the older cars. As more countries phase out R12 (you can stll buy it over the counter in Mexico), it will get more expensive over time. For those who intend to stay with R12, it is a good idea to stock up. The best deals are still on Ebay. There are people who get rid of their old cars and have the R12 cans lying around. I bought a dozen cans on Ebay for about $250 shipped. When you buy them make sure the cars are not rusty, and store them it a cool dry place. Many car repair places will not deal with R12 because the R12 cannot be mixed with 134a, and they need separate systems for the waste. If you do it yourself, stay with R12. |

So let me get this straight... ANYONE without any proof of being a certified mechanic can take this test and get this license? Sounds almost too easy... Is the point here simply to educate anyone who uses R-12 on its proper storage, usage, and recycling procedures?
