Release Bearing and other questions

So I have procured a low mileage 4 sp manual transmission to replace the sick 4sp man that is currently in Frau Frankenbenz. The replacement tranny is an earlier type with all the levers up. My sick tranny has the reverse lever down. I have heard two different things about which release bearing to use - from the seller to keep my release bearing from my sick transmission and place it on the replacement transmission; from the forum to use the release bearing that is currently on the replacement transmission. Does anyone know with absolute certainty which should be used? I have the FSM for the transmission (Thank you! to the wonderful person who posted it on my last thread!) but I haven't been able to find the answer there yet. Also, aside from replacing the release bearing, the pilot bearing, and possibly the center support bearing, is there anything else I should look at while its apart? This release bearing bugaboo is the one thing that is keeping me from swapping it this morning. Thanks in advance.

are you doing the clutch too?

if not it is a good time to consider it unless it is pretty good.

OK, even more confused. The number on the "newer" transmission on the shift lever side of the case is 115 261 12 19. Does this make sense for a 1981 240D? Or is there somewhere else I should look for transmission identification?

When all else fails, use the search

(or why didn't I do this before?) Well, i input the numbers in the forum search, and low and behold my answer was there. I can use this tranny, it is a tranny that was in a W123 240D. Scheduled to do the swap on Thursday! Ordered parts from Phil yesterday. Thanks.

From Phil @ Fastlane, and another gearhead friend, I should use the release bearing that goes with my flywheel and clutch assembly. I think that makes sense, as long as the diameters are the same. So, that's what I ordered. Along with the pilot bearing, center support bearing, and the shift linkage bushings. When I looked at my clutch a year ago, it was in fairly good shape, so I will hold off on replacing that until later. The whole swap is not a moment too soon. I drained the fluid from my current tranny - - there was only about a quart in there, it was black with alot of metalic shimmer, and about an inch of sludge with metal shavings on the drain plug. Filled it back up to the brim with fresh ATF for the short interrum. First is all but gone, and third is on its way. Can't wait to be able to shift properly again.

So he gave you the one for your year car, not based on the tranny. He proly deals with that all the time. It really sounds like your tranny is trashed, Good luck, keep us posted.

project creep

Well, as it always happens, the project expanded. Decided to go ahead and get the clutch assy, but had to order it, should be in today. Took everything apart last night, borrowed a friend's car for the day. Now just crossing my fingers that the "new" tranny is as good as advertised, and not looking forward to modifying the reverse linkage. (we had trouble with that one last time... ) However; stopped by a local pub on the way home, and talked to them about picking up their oil. They were excited about the prospect. They change their fryer 2x a week! So, that should be about 3 cubes a week.

Be sure and make sure that new tranny doesnt have 90w gear oil in it, I found a couple of them polluted with that stuff. A new clutch and P/P is a good idea as long as your in there.

There are (3) holes in the linkage just below the shifter that you can put a pin into that will hold the linkage in the proper alignment for adjustment. (or measuring that reverse rod)
