Rear Transmission Housing
The previous owner did a engine/transmission swap with an SD. They have the electronic speed senders, the TD has a mechanical sender. From what I've been told I need to do is change the rear housing on the transmission to one off a 123 chassis. Change the rear housing and the internal speedometer gear then I can use my TD cable and speedo.
Is this hard to do? How would I get one of these without buying a whole new trnasmission? Could I do this myself or would I have to take it to a shop? Would it show the correct speed and miles? I'm not sure, but isn't the SD have different gearing? |

I can't remember if the speedo cable goes into the tailhousing or the main body of the transmission. If it does in fact drive from the tailhousing, I'll send you the piece from the dead tranny I have in the garage.
I'll look at it tonight and post tomorrow.

The old OM617 from a 79' 300D we had in our class had it in the tailhousing roughly 6 or so inches from the flexplate.

I tried to install a tail housing from a 722.315 (mechanical speedo) into the 722.303 (300SD, electrical speedo). The bolt pattern is roughly the same, but much larger for the 303. It will NOT bolt up. If I want a working speedometer, I will have to find a 722.315 to rebuild, or convert my gauges to run with a 300SD electrical speedo.
