Alda Fitting

if it is not the usual suspect is the alda fitting. this is a small plastic tube that attaches at the back of the valve cover with a banjo bolt. take it off and clean it out if dirty and the car should pep up.

otherwise it could be plugged fuel (2) or air filters.

the usual routine is to change oil and filter, both fuel filters and air filter. for starters, only then can you really tell what you have.

a compression test is always helpful in evaluating an engine.

i suggest paying a mb diesel familiar mechanic to do it and give the car a good once over, prepurchase.

I read up a little bit in the Diesel Giant Website and you could be correctomondo. Since the car is not with me, I will definitely chk the unit along with the other suggestions of the other posts. It doesn't sound like the "german" auto mechanic that he brought the car to got that far. Keep the suggestions coming.

you've mentioned it is 1985 300D turbo with low milage, which means to me that this poor car spent more time in the garage than driving on the road. right? if its a little slow, give it a change to run and run more. let her stretch and exercise. give her an italian tune up and you feel the improvement it makes. that's what these diesel mercedes cars love. to run hard just like at the autobahn, hence the germans built it.
