German water is very high in Lime Content, most people there don't actually drink the tap water (doesn't taste very good, but its not "unsafe") and I doubt they put it in their cars, I'd guess they use distilled for that.

My tap water is good enough to drink, but I certainly wouldn't put it in my cooling system.

I find this interesting...just from a 'wow' perspective....

What do you want to last longer, your body or your car?

Sorry, not trying to be a jerk, but I heard once....you either use a water purifier, or you are the water purifier....

I'm surprised at the number of people that will put Premium fuel in a car and then eat Ramen for lunch....similar thoughts about water....

Never thought about it like that, but with any luck my cars will outlive me so I don't have to deal with driving some new POS.

That is the evil DexCool. Just about the last thing you would ever want to use. Google it for all kinds of horror stories.

F***!!!

I just took my 2002 Chevy Venture to have new brakes and asked the mech to check out why my car had no heat when idling. The heat works a bit when moving but not when stopped. It's showing warmer than usual but not near overheating.
They called me and said that I had a leak from the intake manifold. Prolly means that I'm getting close to a failure.
BIG PROBLEM. . .on Monday I take a van full of kids on the 6th grade trip to Yellowstone, a 12 hour drive from where I am in Denver.
Tonight is Thursday and even if I HAD the $900 to get this fixed, I don't have the TIME!!!! The brakes are going to cost $700 as it is!
It took some teeth pulling to find chaparones for this trip and if I cannot drive (due to the possibility of failure on the road) then the whole trip gets cancelled!
Besides the kids being disappointed, I'd go down in school history as the person who ruined the trip for everyone.

Poop, poop, poop, poop, poop!!!

Any ideas?
Maybe I'll need to rent a car. . .

Sorry to here this, but a good solution would be to rent a car.

What kind of engine is in the Chevy? My moms Olds has there pos 3.1L V6. The intake manifolds on those leak as well, my dad fixed that last year.

I would just rent some kind of van with unlimited mileage, unless you can find someone else with a van to drive. Check out the discount car rental places.

Dex Cool stopped on GM cars in 2001

After more reading on the web (what DID we do before the internet????) I've found that GM stopped using Dexcool in GM products in 2001. My van is a 2002 and I'm NOT the original owner. I'm thinking that maybe there isn't dexcool in the van at all. The leak in the intake manifold is soooo small that there isn't a spot on the drive. The MB has ruined the other half of the driveway but there isn't even a small spot on the drive where the van gets parked.
Or is the leak going into the engine?
I'll get the radiator flushed tomorrow and had the oil changed today.
Hope that will be okay. . .
advice?

Welll . .

I picked up the van today and as soon as I got it off the lot, it started to heat up BIG TIME!!!
I took it back and they put another 1/3 gallon of deathcool in it and then bled the cooling system.
Seemed to do the trick as the van isn't at all near overheating and the heat works again.
I'll take the van to the dealership when I get back from Yellowstone and have the gasket replaced and the radiator flushed.

Good thing the MB has green in it!! (to make this even remotely on topic)

I think you can still drive it for awhile with that type of coolant leak. I don't think coolant will mix with the oil or anything like that. Well at least on my moms 3.1L it didn't.

Just bought two gallons of MB coolant for $16 each, not bad really. Off to get some official MB citrus flush next.

Cheaper then an oil change!

So, what about my '71? Does it care?
My heater valves and radiator are all brass, so I don't think there is any plastic in my cooling system either.

I also can't get Zerex G-05, none of the auto parts stores here carry it, nor do they have a catalog that lists it to order it in. There is an MB dealer - 120 miles away - but if MB's didn't need fancy coolants 25 years ago, I'd rather save my money!
