would the primer pump cause this?

old style pump.

last year all the rubber fuel lines were replaced so, the sad story,

friday on the hwy i went to punch it over 70 and the car was not getting fuel. later it wouldn't go over 25. i would pull over, let it sit then re start and drive away. sometimes i got to 40-45 before it hit the starvation wall. it was so weird because if the road was flat and straight no prob. hit a set of rxr or a curve or hill and starvation set in immediately. just replaced on wednesday the primary and the main fuel filters.

i had just added a full tank of home brew which i used and friday night i drained the tank checked the strainer and it was clean. put in 4 gal of diesel. tried to drive home and the prob continued. i parked it and had MB come and tow it to a dealer.

the tech called a few minutes ago. he found the banjo bolt on the turbo completely blocked. he cleaned it and the line.

he drove it but the wall is still there. his best guesses are the hand primer or the ip. he doesn't want to put a lot of time into it, sincerely, to not run up the repair cost beyond what has been done and the tow.

what do you guys think? i will get the car back later tonight and repost.

i doubt it is the primer pump, unless it was allowing air in some how. that hand pump is only active when you are manually pumping it to bleed the system after fuel filter replacement, was it left un screwed?

Ok this is highly unlikely but just is simple super duper easy thought that wasn't mentioned and I didn't see posted.

You said you changed your filter 2 days prior to pouring in the bio-d. The bio-d would have losend a lot of crap and put it through your filter (could be plugged already even after 2 days) Except you said your tank screen was clean soooooo not sure of the chances of that. But like a said a super duper easy place to start is always filters.

Does is slow over time or is it right after starting it as well?

Do you hear a sucking "woosh" after taking off your fuel cap? If so, you might need to clean your vent. It's on the driver's side under the car (mid-to rear), a horn-shaped vent.

Assuming you've checked your filters and tank screen.

I had the same problem... tightened up the injector lines (could see a slight fuel leak => air leak as well) and also replaced the primer pump (was also leaking air/fuel). I'm not sure which of these fixed the problem... just go ahead and replace the primer pump... it is cheap and easy to do.

If you can see fuel leaking then air is also likely coming in... you can clean off the fuel system and look for what looks like oil (i.e., diesel) and fix the problem from there.

As a side note my fuel mileage improved noticable (by 1 or 2 mpg) after the above were done

later that same night.........

well one day i will take notes and read them.

forgot the 17mm, forgot something to poke the oil return hose with and forgot to check the primer before driving.

got home and the primer was loose so i thightened. i will look at the rest in the morning light.

i am leaning towards bad hooch. i topped off red with what was left in the drum and a couple cubies drained from brownie. within 10 miles red was making me aware that optimum compression discharge ignition was not happening. confirmed when i dove for the ramp on the i and the car would not shift/speed up. got off and hit the mobil for fuel but first i added a bottle of power service then 5 gal of d2. it worked. the car was more driveable after that. since that is at b75 it will take a while to clean that tank out. maybe more ps.

when i picked up brownie i added a can of stp diesel fuel treatment (no ps at speedway)and filled the tank with generic d2. still could not kick down to get passing gear. maybe still too much hooch in the tank. i could run at 3/4throttle and roll up to 65 but couldn't downshift and smoke to get there. maybe a couple drives around the county to waste fuel and it will clean itself out.

but tomorrow i check the return lines and the oil hose before taking dmi to work.

tomorrow does come.....

oil return line from valve cover is clear on both ends.

hand pump is tight.

the only fuel on the engine was from where i pulled off the cigar hose. whoops!!

gonna give it a blast on the hwy in an hour or so.

will advise

still no wot aceleration.

The old style screw-handle primer pump is notorious for causing this exact problem. If fact, there are at least a few stories on this board of cars being sold because that pump was leaking and the owner didn't know why the engine wouldn't run. I think we hear less and less about it these days because they've almost all been replaced by the new style.

Agreed... if you see fuel leak when you pump your old style primer this is a clear sign... even if you don't you should replace the pump with the new style.

New style pump p/n : Bosch 2 447 010 033

Yeah it looks like they may be out of stock... you might try calling Phil to see when they are expected. I was able to call my local parts house and give them the Bosch p/n... took less than a day for them to get it from their supplier. If Phil can't help you there should be other on line suppliers... these show up on ebay regularly as well.
