Delayed Shift (when floored) 1985 300SD
Hi,
I got a buddy that just picked up a SWEET '85 300SD. Rides like a champ. Shifts beautifully, EXCEPT when the pedal is mashed all the way to the floor. It'll get up to 4400 RPM Screeming, but no shift unless I let up on the pedal. This has got to be an easy fix, but what is it? Thanks Marty |

This is what the car is supposed to do when the kickdown switch under the pedal has been activated. If you are running along and floor the pedal there is an electrical switch under there that drops the transmission into a lower gear. Do the same on acceleration from a start and it holds that gear until you let up enough to release the switch.
Try this. With the engine off, practice pressing the pedal down. You should be able to feel and maybe hear the switch click. For full normal acceleration, you have to learn to floor the pedal without pressing hard enough to throw the kickdown switch. And will you dang kids stop trying to hot-rod a diesel. Ken300D

Hi Ken,
thanks, but I don't think that is a good answer. I personally have a 1985 300SD and it doesn't behave that way. this car has an issue, I'm just trying to figure out what it is. Marty |

This series of pages provide a very good explanation of how an automatic transmission works - to include how it shifts and the relationship between speed and rpm: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm
I really didn't "get" the automatic transmission until I read it.
