Sure. just drop in a 617.952. That's what I did.

The 952 is built to handle the heat of a turbo with oil cooled pistons. Most non-turbo 617s seem to have longevity issues anyway; it doesn't seem worth the work to bolt on new injectors, manifolds, turbo, and injection pump.

WInmutt,

The MB engineers didn't say: "Hey Schultz, hang a turbo on those 912 engines and relabel them 952".

The engineers hardened up the 952 version to withstand the extra heat and power the turbo will develope. They used oil cooled pistons, nitrided crankshaft, higher capacity oil pump and added an ALDA.

You will also have to change the IP to one with an ALDA or no more power will be gained.

The reliabailty of your 912 engine will be compromised by the extra heat and power developed by the turbo.

I agree with Old300D: Replace your engine with a 617.952 if you need more power.

I am about to purchase an NA 83 300d with manual transmission. Arent the 952 starters on the other side?

This car only has 150k on it. Some minor body damage and in need of start ignition, some missing trim and a real paint job. However for $1g it seems like a good buy (manual is must have for me, my wifes 300td is a nice drive but auto's put me to sleep).

winmutt,

The 617.952 starters are on the passenger side under the manifolds and turbo where they are difficult to get to.

The 603 engines have the starters on the drivers side and are easier to access.

No, starters for the 617 diesels are all on the right side under the exhaust.

And the turbo engines have been successfully converted to manual transmissions as well. The Euro 300D would be an excellent starting point for that.
