DC does too, but they would rather hassle the commuters going 26 in a 25 zone than enforce the law.

Yes, driving is serious business.

But riding doesn't have to be. I remember the first time I enjoyed an alcoholic drink while riding in a car in Germany. I was a bit shocked, but they assured me that it was okay, so long as the driver isn't drinking any.

FYI, this is not the cell phone thread......

I have one of those wedge cupholders, and use it for a backup. It lives in the passenger door pocket. I use it to hold my kuuzie for my diet Coke cans, which I go through at an alarming rate.
I can't fine the pic, but in the console I use a single adjustable plastic drink holder I got at either PepBoys or Autozone. It has a single screw hole in the middle, and adjusts from smaller than can size to a way big-gulp size. I use it for the EVER PRESENT coffee cup. Screw hole goes through the middle carpet pad and secures it fine in the plastic beneath. Cans can accomodate the armrest down, coffee cup require armrest at attention. Cheap and VERY effective.

Please yall, don't get so self rightious over this "driving is serious business" stuff. It can be perfectly serious with a sip of coffee on the straight-aways.

I love my car to death. It is one of the best built cars I have ever driven. However, besides the missing cup holders, I have a few (maybe strange) complaints.

-No rhetrostat to control the brighness of the gauges
-Gauges are lit from front, not back
-You can put it in gear without the key (maybe my car is just broke)
-It has individual settings to turn on the left and right parking lights (why???)
-Power antenna - so useless

Not really a complaint, but something strange I noticed today; Did you know the brake lights don't come on unless you have the key on? Weird...

-It originally had a rhetrostat, turn the odometer reset knob, unless it's been bypassed.
-I like the fact that I can get the car out of park without putting in the key. I don't need any more "idiot-proof" features on my car.
-I assume the single side parking lights are a requirement someplace in the world, but I don't know.
-My power antenna works just fine.
- I thought all brake lights worked only with the key, not true?

-the reset button of the odometer trip meter also serves as the rheostat by turning it clockwise to brighten and CCW to do the opposite.
-technically, the gauges are lit from the back but the overengineering Germans put a fiber optic clear plastic to illuminate the front of the intrument cluster.
-the gear shift lever, i'm glad they did it this way and they did not incorporate it with their overengineering vacuum system that you can only shift through gears when the key is on or when stepping on the brakes or pushing some button or knob.
left and right parking lights are used on countries that parallel parks on the road whether on the left side or the right side of the curb
-the antenna, i don't know why they put a switch just like on the power windows? do the germans pull their antenna out halfway or not all the way? i mean, whats the point? i will pull it all the way up or all the way down.

The left and right side parking lights are nice if you ever park on the side of a real dark narrow street for a while. I have used them, and because they look odd people notice them.

I have found the dash lighting to be just fine now that it is sorted out. These cars didn't come with dark guage clusters from the factory. You probably have a few burned out bulbs and a faulty dimmer.

Exactly.
I love my auto tranny on my MB. First one I have had in years. So i had to fix some vacuum leaks and change tranny fluid every 2 years. Thats a small price to pay to be able to feel safe driving while drinking coffee, passing toys to the kids, and changing the radio station.

I got rid of the cell phone cause it was too dangerous.

That is insane for a cup holder like that! I can buy those things all day long for $10 or less.

Isn't this true of most 80's cars??

Shift/brake interlock has not always been required. It was not required 25 years ago. People used to be smarter, and not take the car out of Park until they expected to Go!

Required by law in Europe, where they were designed, so that the edge of the car could be marked when parking on the shoulder. It makes sense for Europe, where roads are narrow and there is little clearance.

Would you prefer to lower it maually before going through the car wash? Would you rather leave it up continually to get vandalized?

Why would you need brake lights if the key is off? Do you drive with the key off?

Much of this made sense to the German engineers 30-40 years ago, when most of these features appeared. By 1982 your car had the benefit of decades of experience, and Mercedes did not change just to be 'brand new' each model year.

Enjoy!
