Yes, heard that also. The pinion wheel is hard to adjust right. Can you telleme more about:
-where to find the special socket, or maybe a MB parts number?
-where i can find 'how to overhaul a w116 differential' information?

Anyway: bought the diff, and opened it. Looks good on the inside, and its definately a limited slip and 2.65.
I'll order one new friction plate, and compare it with the ones that are in it, to know what state they are in.
Diff. (half axles) bearings look still almost like new.

So maybe i only put in new seals and a clean up, because the thing is covered in Las Vegas desert sand (guy told me that)

actually, 300d is my everyday driver to work about a total of 50 miles both ways, workbound and homebound. im doing a combination of both open highway, and stop and go traffic most of the time where the engine runs a little noisy and rough and the water temp is high, but when i get a chance, i drive it 100+ mph which also makes the water temp rise to 100 deg.+. but the engine is quieter and smoother at 3500-4000 rpms. water temp is normal, 80-90 deg at 65-75 mph @ 3000 rpm.

yes, i would not recommend anything higher than the 346 which comes stock in a euro na 300stick.

in my 240/300 na i originally had the 346 gears with a four speed. it would run 100 mph. i switched to 307 gears and it would still go 100 tops. 30 mpg at 75 mph, but taking off on a hill was a bit dicey.

in a stick equipped 300 i would recommend a 346 gear for all around driving.

with an automatic, you can run a 247 gear, but while the turbo is spooling up you can brush your teeth with the extra time. or sing the full chorus in "hey jude".

well obviously someone is gonna hafto engineer a 2 speed rear end for the dozen or so manual tranny 300d people here.

Yes I agree, I wouldn't want anything taller than my 3.46 for around town, especially as tired as my clutch is, I always use the e-brake to start out on anything more than a moderate hill, but I'd sure like something on the hiway to bring her back into the powerband while cruising @ 75-80

I try to drive my gasser around town and my benz on the hiway

my car won't go faster than 97 mph (GPS accuracy) @ sea level.

my motor was fresh.

and the odo was pretty close but not close enough to really discern between 97 and 100.

the best would be a 346 with a five speed od. and a turbo 617.

imho

5-speed tranny on ebay

"Also, I purchased it as the transmission only, with no linkage, so the buyer will need to find or fabricate the necessary parts. for a 4-speed to 5-speed conversion, the links are the same, with the exception of the 5th-Reverse arm being mounted upside down on the 5-speed"

I'd be all over it, but the no linkage/shifter clause is a deal killer for me.

$500/$675 is just a *little* high for a 39 year old tranny of unknown condition and unknown miles. If the BIN were 120-150, I'd be all over it like drool on a St. Bernard.

Thumbs up

Are the four speeds from 280Es worth any cash? i.e. will they bolt to a diesel? I know where are few are hanging out.

Was it ever determined if the 247 from a 6.9 will bolt into the 123 chassis?

Ever searching for a limited slip setup for my 280e euro dedicated autocrosser.

Now I am thinking of a 126 247 or 224 lsd.

According to my calculations, with the 224 rear, running in first is within 2% of running in second with the 369 ratio I presently have. Taking off will be without drama though as I would have to baby it to get it going without smoking the clutch.

Yet again in driving around this season (lots of ice as its been so cold) I wish I had a Limited Slip.....it'd be so helpful. I almost got stuck trying to back out of a spot in a parking lot because one wheel was on some ice and the other was on pavement! I don't know if I'd want the 2.47 diff though....I am still undecided on that.

I routinely hit 110 in my euro 300D with a bad alignment.

Also the W126 420SEL and the 560SEL. The 560SEL also had limited slip standard.
