holy 2.47 sleeper

ridiculous would be the word.
that is definitely probably what people were thinking seeing a 123 passing them at about 90.
nice around town rolling about in S.. and overall not a huge loss from the start.
definitely will be needing to keep the nearly unlimited top end in check, not to mention 17"s and bilstein HD's are near mandatory.
good times.

aw man, now I am drooling even more for a 2.47.....I was flying a few days ago even with my 3.07 though, at 4800 rpm in 4th your going really fast!! I was like a streak going down the road..... I bet I suprised the people behind me (a pickup truck driver who was tailgating me at 82mph for a while) and then I took off, must have suprised them, maybe they thought my "old diesel" was maxed out at 82mph.... I probably did about 110 down a hill moving away from that group of cars (kept this speed up almost 4 miles nonstop, pedal alllll the way to the floor)....things would get out of hand if I had a 2.47.... Then again, it'd be nice to set the cruise at 74mph and have it at 2500rpm or so....that'd be awesome.

I'm happy with my 3.69 and 93mph top speed, for now.

Whats an early 240 automatic got, and why won't it go over 87mph?

Poor Shlomo jus wants to die at top speed!

Early 240D should have a 3.69.

It *could* go over 87mph. If it had more guts.

The only reason I can top it out at 93mph is the extra 53hp I have under the hood.
4850rpm verified with a following car.

Here is proof

Would putting a different differential in really slow it down in town?

I could really use picking up a highway MPG or two (or 10 heh heh) if it wouldn't effect in town driving much!

Liar!! Liar!! Liar!!! :liar: Whats the intercooler straight pipe, and vnt for then?

Actually though I'm very happy with my 2.88 . Combined with my modified turbo at 60+ it just takes a brief moment for my car to gather its composure and then I'm gone. Three weeks a go a had some late model gasser sport pick up pass me doing about 80. I decided what the hell and punched it. I passed him doing 90+ going up hill

I'd love sticking a 2.87 limited slip in it for the winter.

If I could find a 2.47 for a reasonable price I'd probably be willing to *try* it....put it in and see how it goes....but I'd keep my 3.07 in case I couldn't live with the loss of off the line power. I use that pretty often. Sure would be nice on the freeway though, nice and quiet.

I've never tried a top speed run on my 124 with the stock 2.65. I think the highest I've gotten it was 110 and it was still (slowly) pulling. Published spec is 122mph, just a few MPH short of the 87 300D with the 603. So I think the top speed would just about be at the governor in 4th.

I don't think I'd switch to a lower rear with the 602 because the around town performance would suffer. It's just about right with the 2.65. Maybe I'd try it on a 603, although I haven't driven an 87 to see how much peppier it is at low speeds.

My 83 300D w123 NA 4spd does 85 no prob, I dont think 100 would be unreasonable. I havent gone faster as there is a serious wheel balance issue, plus I'm waiting on my "de taxi" custom plates and the ignition is hotwired. Cop would love to pull me over lol.

big eggs

after an extended jaunt on the highway today..
have to say this might even be too big for about this geography.
haven't even tried to top it out and won't be trying;
its that fast.. even with my old 3.25 diff in the trunk.

already thinking what 2.65s and 2.88s fit??
all around unbelievable, definitely should have been a bigger rear stock.

Believe its a 2.88.......for the '85 US market version. The 82-84 is a 3.07 ratio as is stamped on the rear side of the lower ear of the differential housing. Not the cover. Clean it off and you will see a string of numbers.

hmm! 2.88. the thread title is --- holy "2.47" sleeper. is the lower ratio the better? my 300D runs fast on interstate but not as quick on stop and go and uphill. is it the advantages and disadvantages of lower ratio?

I believe you are going to be closer to 4200 or 4300 rpm at 100 mph, which is just about where you are starting to lose power. I suspect you will run out of power before you run out of rpms if you go much higher than 2.88 anyway.
