1979 300sd
So about a month ago I bought a 1979 300sd for 3,500 that runs ok and has a great interior, but no running A/C. I was wondering if I paid what its worth and why I don't see that many more people on this forum with the same car. All I see are 84-87 300d's, is this because the 1979 300sd was more rare, or just more crappy and not worth the time to fix?

The W116 chassis (1978-80) 300SD Turbo is not as common as the w123 chassis (1977-85) 240D & 300D sedans. It was built for 3 years, sold only in the United States, and was replaced in 1981 with a new chassis.
HOWEVER it shares the SAME ENGINE as the 1982-85 300D/CD/TD and 300SD. YES your car is not as common as some of the other 617 cars. NO your car is just as durable and well built as the other 617 powered cars.

I had a client that had two 116 300sd's and both had well over 300,000mi on them . The only drawback, in MY opinion, is the early climate control that your car has. The later climate control that the 82 and later cars was alot more dependable.
This guys 79SD took a head on with a cadillac that shortened the mercedes front end by 2 feet. Out of three people in the accident, he was the only one that didn't go to the hospital! Even though the four doors were bent, you could still open and close ALL four of them and they would latch.

well, i have one of those W116-D.
And they rock, somehow they are more peppy than the W123 with the same engine. Even if longer, heavier and wider. they also have the most impressive turning radius that i ever seen on a full size sedan. They really have 2 major problems. The ACC (a legacy for the early agreement between Mercedes and Chrysler) transplanted directly from an early 70's Chrysler Imperial, SUX!!! And are a little prone to rust. I you have one rust free good for you, but watch out...
