Which Turbo do I have?!
I've read a lot of threads on Turbos but could not find one that tells me how to identify which Turbo I have on my '85 300D?! How can I tell if it's KKK or Garret Turbo - please clarify.
Thanks, James

The most obvious thing, as you can tell from that pic, is the location of the wastegate. On the KKK, its that big round thing that's facing you. On the Garret, it faces the front of the car. I do believe the KKK builds boost faster, but tops out earlier than the Garret, which takes slightly longer to spool up but has more boost potential. The Garret's wastegate is also tougher to adjust because the innerds that need to be messed with are under a cover that has to be removed, while on the KKK they're right out in the open. I think most OM617's came with the Garret.

It's like why MB named some cars "250D" in europe but "300D 2.5 Turbo" in the USA. Last edited by ForcedInduction; 05-30-2006 at 02:34 AM. |

Every '85 D/SD I've seen with Fed emissions has the Garrett, mine does. I'd bet money so does yours.
The KKK I plucked for my SD came from a blue '84 SD with 398K The few '83s I have seen for parts have Garretts. My '87 SDL has the KKK. Almost all have the Garrett. Dunno why. Probably due to supply

Garret in my 90 300D 2.5T or 250D or whatever the heck MB wants to call it . Says so on a little plate on the shaft housing next to the compressor.

My 1983 300CD came with a Garrett, but I replaced it with a KKK. Not much difference between the two (when working properly). I bet you couldn't tell without looking under the hood.
