return line plug
the smell of diesel tells me the return line plug on cyl 5 is leaking. the fuel around the injector and watching it puddle just now confirms it.
anyone know if there is a homefab that can be doe for this or do i need to order this one teeny tiny part?

Unless you just don't have the proper plug, you need to replace the line instead. Replace all of it.

A piece of 1/8 hose and a golf tee might work until you can get the proper part.

A 1/4" sheet metal screw in a spare piece of return line worked pretty well for me for a couple of weeks until I could get the proper part. Looking back if I would have wrapped some teflon tape around the screw it would have been even better.

And wrapping teflon tape around the screw wouldn't have helped a bit, and may have made it leak more. Teflon tape only does anything for metal-to-metal contact. |

I used a form nail, (one of those nails they use for putting concrete forms together that has a double head for easier removal) clipped it to length and installed it about two years ago. Cost: about 2 cents incl. spare.

Read the original post. He's not missing the plug. It's leaking.
He does not need a plug. He needs the hose. |

Thanks, You are Correct!
The only way the tiny part can "leak" is if it is missing. Fastlane, "Buy Parts" at the top, carries return line hose cheap! I was trying to answer his question instead of looking at and solving his actual problem.

thanks everyone
i found an inch and a half of return line i never threw away and plugged one end with a golf tee.
matt i had replaced all the line but have never done the plugs. guess i need three. the old one was a rubber plug one piece and the side had split open.

THis happened to my mom about 10 years ago with her 300SD. I remember I ended up going to the auto parts store and getting a vaccum line cap and squeezing it on there so we could get around the rest of the weekend and then get the proper part on Monday.
