2.47 DONE!....almost

Well, I finished installing my 2.47 this weekend. Boy, is it nice! Like everyone else said... just a slight loss off the line, but once it gets going, cruisin' smooooth!

Here is my problem: I thought that by simply replacing the speedo out of my donor car, I would be good to go as far as the speed correction. But, I can't even get my donor speedo to work...and when it is hooked up, I get all kinds of weirdo instrument cluster gremlins (showing VERY low oil pressure, fuel tank pegged full, no glo plug light, etc). When I re-installed the old speedo, the instruments worked just fine. I did notice that the donor speedo has an additional pin for the harness where my old one doesn't. ANYWAY, can any of the 2.47 swappers help me out?

Thanks
Brian

I had a similar problem when I was removing the speedo cluster a few months ago. A stray +12volt wire somehow shorted and blew one of the wire traces on the speedo. I soldered in a bridge wire and was good to go.

It's kind of a long shot, but remove your speedo and check all the wire traces on the back of the guages.

nice bri,
can't help you on the speedo, left my old one in; figure about 12mph off.
am sure you have already adjusted the alda.. but definitely if you haven't.
remember! rubber side down.

Rudolph,

No, I haven't adjusted my ALDA. I have read the DIY on dieselgiant's site, but it just seems to be a how-to of checking to make sure that none of the lines/hoses are clogged. Do you know a good step-by-step?

Thanks
Brian

bri,

if your alda system is clear (which it more than likely is) you will notice a significant difference.
check out this for getting to the adjustment..

again.. do not worry about bending the metal back when leveraging the little cap.. it's all coming off anyway.

""To adjust the ALDA, use a screwdriver and needle-nose pliers to rip off the little 1/2" "can" that seals the adjustment screw on top of the ALDA. The screw is held by a 10mm locknut, which you loosen and then turn the screw "out" (counter clockwise) to adjust richer. On the 617 engines this is so easy it doesn't even get your fingers dirty (on the 603's, however, the darn thing is buried under the intake manifold). I'd say to start by turning it out one full turn, then go for a drive with your screwdriver and 10mm wrench in your pocket.""

think mine was about right with one full turn from wide open.. half a turn smokes'em out if your into that.
once you get'er right, lock it down and 'yer dun.
let me know how she goes..

Not much "type of car" info in your post or sig.
Of course I found it in your profile, but the less we dialup guys have to change screens the better.......

Alberta,

Yep, I used the diff from the 380se parts car. Does anyone know if there is a way to just change the speedo sender to make my original speedo work?

Thanks
Brian

Brian,

In a nutshell, no. The actual speedometer electronics is what counts.

There are a handful of "black boxes" that can change the Pulses-per-Mile (PPM) that your speedo counts. You wire the black box between the speedo and sensor, then enter a factor to change it by, say 10%. The black box will then drive your old speedo at the correct speed.

Check DakotaDigital.com - they have one for ~$100. However, it is far cheaper to replace your speedo with the 160mph version from the donor car. You want the SGI-5.

Thorsen,

I have the speedo from the old car. The problem is that when installed, I get all kinds of electrical instrument gremlins + the speedo no workie.

Did the Donor speedo test good before putting it in your car?

The whole donor car was an unknown, since it was essentially a hulk and didn't run. I purchased the whole car for $125 just so I could get the 2.47. So I have no idea if/when the donor speedo quit working.

Sounds like it's time to hit the Classifieds here or eBay. You want a 160mph speedo from the 126.
