fuel sender/ sensor '73 280 doesn't fit in '80 sd?????

I got that sender yesterday figuring both 116's would have the same tank. it goes in allright, but at the bottom it doesn't sit straight (it touches the back of the tank) so you can't twist it in the thread.
WHY?
I tried banging around some in that area of the tank with a breaker bar thinking it might be dented. but that seems not to be the case.
