617.952 Engine swap into '84 190D?

Has anyone succesfully transplanted or even attempted to swap a 617.952 5 cyl turbo diesel into an 1984 ish 190D yet? Just wondering... I have both and my old 2.2 is quite tired. Oil pressure drops to 1 bar at warm idle and then the hydraulic cam followers start clattering, eventually dropping a cylinder until I get underway and bring the RPM's up again.

Thanks,
Kurt

The Finns have transplanted OM603's and OM606's into 190Ds before. OM617 is a tad smaller.

Something to think about is the rear-end ratio. At least for me the 3.07 rear-end ('84 300d) does too many revs on the highway. I think the 2.2 has a 3.42 ratio, meaning about 3k rpm at 60mph. Just my opinion that the 617 won't really be efficient or long lived if you do lots of highway driving. It will be underloaded especially since the 190 weighs some 700 lbs less, and regular underloading is not good for diesels. If the 190d has overdrive or fast acceleration up to highway speeds is the goal then thats another story. I don't think swapping rear-ends is any easier swapping than engines between the two cars.

Any idea where I can find pictures or details?

Are there any websites on these OM603 and OM606 swaps out there? And as to the rear end ratio I agree. What ratio did the '87 190D 2.5 Turbo get from the factory?

Thanks,
Kurt

I don't know what the '87 190 2.5 had, as the adsit catalog did not list it. They did say the '87 190e has a 3.27, so mabee thats it, but it is possible they just don't have one available so they didn't list it. FWIW The Adsit catalog is free for asking and has lots of good info about parts interchangability, rearends etc. I can't see buying anything from them as their prices are very high. I would think a google search on both questions would have success, at least the ratio question.

the 617 should fit. i dont know what other issues you might have though. like pan clearance, wiring issues etc.

i would think you would want about a 265 rear ratio with the 617 engine.

not that hard to swap and i think that ratio came with the 2.6 engine.
