ATF - What type? F, Dextron I, II, III, IV, V.....
Hi,
I'm going to be doing a transmission service on my 1985 190d and the manual says to contact my local MB dealer for fluid type. Does anyone have any input? Thanks all!

I suspect it will have to be Dexron III since Dexron II isn't widely available any longer. Dexron III is supposed to be backwards compatible with Dexron II.
You can purchase a generic Dexron III for less than $2/qt.

Type of ATF in 1985 190D
Hello; I have a 1984 190D with a slight transmission fluid leak that is the causation for me having to add fluid as needed regularly, and I use Dextron III. As long as I maintain proper fluid level, it works like a charm - good, strong shifting that is consistent ... you'd never think it was such an old automobile!
I now make a point of always having a quart in the trunk at all times, because I have encountered situations in the past where I needed it and could not always buy it on the quick while on the road. I don't know about you, but I absolutely love my little 190D! Sure, it's the bottom-of-the-line model in the Mercedes line of automobiles, but when I was becoming acquainted with it's maintenance procedures after I first got it, I was really jazzed to read a sentence at the bottom of many sections regarding various adjustment procedures on all models of Mercedes, and it went as follows: "On the 190D, this type of adjustment is not necessary, nor is it even possible." How does that grab ya?! Oh, one more interesting thing about my 190D: It had belonged to the deceased father of my landlord, and it sat on the gentleman's property for over five years without being started during the entire five years. The landlord told me that if I could get it started and get it off the property so he wouldn't have to have it "hauled off", that I could have the vehicle! I took a good healthy battery with me to the house, installed it; checked all the fluids - found them in good order - then attempted to start it. Do you know that she started right up - I mean she didn't even hesitate- vrrrroooom!! I was thrilled! And everything worked on it! With the past-due registration fees to bring current, this great car cost me a sum of; oh, about $254! And now, two years down the road, it's turning out to be the best car I ever had - she's never let me down yet! Regards, Michaela 1984 190D 2.2 |

Michael, did the tranny fluid leak occur before or after you started using DexIII? If it was me, I'd buy dealership fluid for the 20 yr old Benz even if it cost a few dollars more.

Do you know who makes the fluid for MBZ? I'm pretty sure that Exxon/Mobil makes their engine oil. Oh and I love the 4 cylinder 190d. It is going to be in the family until it can no longer be maintained. The '88 is another story. Its more like a new MBZ and I'm not sure if I will keep repairing it.
