2.47 ratio role call/opinions

Who has done the swap on the 126s? Opinions from those who have driven them a while now???

I am seriously thinking of putting a SD drivetrain in a 420SEL. I have a spare 380SE rear end ass'y as well so, using it in the SD is an option however, the SD is pretty rough. The 420 is in good shape but has drivetrain issues.

Yes.

I have the complete rear suspension/axles/diff from my '85 380 that got t-boned last yr.

I started restoring the SD and thought I would use the 2.47 in it but it needs way too much cosmetics for me. It may become the donor car as it has a new MB trans.

I wonder if anyone has ever done the '617 in a V8 car' swap? The value of the 420 is rock bottom so, I thought I would build something to keep, drive.

I bet the swap would be easy with a complete donor car sitting right there

Thats what I'm hoping.

It looks as though it should bolt in. Just have to sort out the other stuff.
The V8 radiator will be nice. No place for the oil cooler though.

Anyone done this???

I have had the 2.47 in my 300SD since April, 2005. It has been the most satisfying modification that I have made on the car. If you spend a lot of time on the highway, you will be rewarded with much quieter and smoother operation of the car. That being said, the downside is that there is slightly less acceleration off the line (0-60 in just 14 seconds) and slightly more need for downshifting in hilly areas. The mod may get you about 1, maybe 2, MPG more than the 3.07 in highway driving. I am a dottering ole guy, so the acceleration thing doesn't bother me in the least. If you meet the above criteria and have the time and parts---Go for it.

Good luck,
Tom

Then there's the weight difference... SEL being heavier.

I would "second" what Tom said...a very satisfying mod. I only have about one tank's-worth (B99) of mileage under my belt, but am completely happy with my decision to go forward with the project. Not as big (read no) difference in mileage from my one tank fill-up...I expected some difference.

Did you happen to snipe the one up by the border for $300? I called a day late.
