I have a 99 E-300-TD. I commute to work by train, so I don’t put may miles on the car. I am all the way up to 11,000 miles at the moment

I changed the oil at 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 miles. From now on I was thinking every 5,000 miles, but It may take me over a year to put 5,000 miles on it.

Is there any problem letting the old oil sit in the car that long?

In the summer months I do take it on numerous 100 mile trips.

It is a good thing I love this car, because it will be a LONG time before it runs out of steam.

I'm not an expert, but I've heard 2, 3 and 4 months as a recommended maximum time interval for oil changes.

Beware of condensate

Diesels thrive on high mileage and suffer from sitting around. Beware of condensation: this can cause water to build up in the bottom of your fuel tank. Then bacteria will grow and eventually clog a filter. Best bet for a low-mileage diesel is to keep the fuel tank full as much as possible; that keeps humid air from creating the condensation problem.
I understand the same problem can happen with oil ( ut to a lesser extent), so I would agree with other writer than changes more than once a year would be indicated.

If you want, I'll drive the car for you while you're away on trips or whatever.

Seriously, I don't think you'll have any problems with the oil, but I would make sure to keep the fuel tank full.

I think I would make an effort to put a few more miles on it... maybe drive it around just for fun on the weekends or something, just to keep things moving and all that good stuff.

At the rate you're going, you will get an outstanding price for it if/when you ever decide to sell it.
