yep, I ended up doing da same thing - bowl right under but still had plenty ending up on the floor. Too bad no shut off valve. I changed the hoses too. Still had original with braded cover. What a mess!!

While doing the veggie conversion thingie I put a shut off valve in the diesel line. I run the car until it dies before changing filters...still a bit of seepage but not the gush of before.

I stuffed a towel under the filter on my 606, to catch the fuel. Again when installing the new filter. Worked like a champ.

Assume this is about the see through fuel filter, on my 240D I stuff layers of newspaper just under the filter to soak up what little fuel that drips when the filter is removed, I am more concerned about keeping the fuel from pouring all over the rubber engine mounts than the holly mess that it creates on the floor.

Degreaser

When I did mine, I put a pan on the floor and a bowl under the filter. But still got fuel all over under the filter. After I sprayed a degreaser where the fuel dripped. let it sit for a few minutes and washed it down. I forgot the brand of this degreaer but its very good and I believe Home Depot carries it. It comes in a purple looking gallon container and the liquid is bluish in color. It really removes any oil/fuel residue and odor. If anyone wants to know what it is, just post and I'll get the name.

Thanks Diesel Gaiant. Your guide was very helpful.
