then and now

It runs and looks pretty good to. I get a lot of looks driving around town. People hear it and then look a second time. (Is That A diesel? is the first thing they say). I have had the gas station person ask me if I knew I was putting diesel fuel in it before too. That was cool...

I had some transmission problems but $850 later trans is good. The tourque converter was change to a low stal type, now I really need to regear the diffs. I parked the Jeep because I don't want to mess up the trans. I should be back on the road by the end of the month.

Did you find out about duplicating the engine adapter?

I traced out the adapter onto a piece of 1/4 in wood. It looks pretty simple because it uses the adapter that is on the Mercedes motor with a 3/8 in thick piece of aluminum attached. I traced out the holes that were drilled in the plate aluminum. Mine is mated to the 3spd auto and I'm not sure if the manual tranny has a different bell housing. Jon

Why didn't you go with a higher stall speed to get more torque off the line?

When the tranny guy who built the tranny told me the converter was a high stall I asked him what that was and he told me most diesels have a low stall because of the rpm/torque. I didn't put 2&2 together that the red line on the Jeep was the same as the red line on the Mercedes. I hope it will work better with 4.10 gears instead of the 3.07 that is in it now.

I haven't noticed the exhaust smell at all with the soft top on. I haven't had the top off yet. I plan to do 3in or 3 1/2 exhaust from the turbo back, maybe turn it down just before the rear axle. The exhaust ends right next to the transfer case now and no smell.

I am not sure about the laws in your state as far as registration of a previous gas now diesel, but here in TX I just needed to show inspection papers (safety only). I love pulling up and not have ing to pay for emissons testing.

I dont have a jeep but I like my converted off-road toy.

My adapter is about 3/8 thick welded to the stock mercedes adapter. as for the distance of engagement I'm not sure. I tried to upload a pic of the TQ with a spacer to locate the flywheel but the file is too big. You might just have to mock it up and see what the distance is. Jon

Have you regeared the axles yet? I would recommend looking to do an axle swap if you still have the stock D30/D35 combo. If you are going to put money into axles you might as well put it into good axles. You can pick up a set of D44's from a 87-91 Grand Wagoneer and swap them in pretty easy. Check out Mr. N's Danaa 44 pages as well as www.pirate4x4.com
