Please Help SLS Pump / system question
Hey all!
I am nearing the completion of the new timing chain and tensioner install on my wagon (Thanks to this forum and Diesel Giant). In the process I had to pull the SLS pump to access the guide rail pin. Accidentally, I lost alot of hydraulic oil. I am putting the pump back on now, but wonder if i need to "prime" it somehow . Also what's the best way to re-fill the system, as well as any suggestions on any oils/fluids other than the $$$$ Mercedes/ Febi. Autozone has a five gallon bucket of CUI aw-32 ? for under $30. Help? Comments? Suggestions? Thanks, Jon

YOu can pick up 3 liters of the Febi for around $11 bucks per. I can't see a real reason not to. You aren't saving that much for Heaven's sake! YOu don't need 5 gallons.......
When I had my pump off for replacement, I just buttoned everything back up, poured fluid into the reservoir, and off she went. System is self priming. Be sure to monitor level in tank for awhile to achieve proper level. You should also bleed the system of any old fluid, and install new filter at this time. Then you're done with it for awhile (in theory)

DO NOT use regular hydraulic oil. There WILL be damage. I tried mineral based tractor/farm hydraulic oil in my TD and the leveling valve pooped out less than 3 days later. It's not worth saving a few bucks to risk your $989.99 pump or any other $$$ suspension part. JimmyL, is on the right idea. If the fluid is old, now is the perfect time to flush it out with new oil and change the filter. |

Thanks for the input guys..
I'm always lookin to save a buck, but not at the expense of performance or incurring damage - in any circumstance . Flush and filter change coming up. JimmyL - know where can I get the Febi Oil @ $11 in Atl, GA, or is that an online purchase? As far as bleeding the system - I've heard of the bleeder "screw" on the leveling valve - It's too dark now, but tomorrow I'll check it out. Any tips here?
On a side note - My pass side hood hinge spring retainer snapped at the firewall? from corrosion when I cranked her up ! Made a loud bang and scared the crap out of me, since I JUST installed the new timing chain and visions of spewing engine parts flew through my head. This isn't great either of course. I'll search the threads and see if I can come across any other occurances and the remedies. Didn't rip the sheet metal, just the spring bracket popped in half near the bend Suggestions anyone? However, I imagine the body shop is in my near future , OR i'd better learn how to do some welding and body work! Anybody got @ good go to guy for this kind of thing here in Atl? Thanks everyone, Jon
