Timing without the drip tube...

As has been mentioned in some of my other posts I have an abnormal hatred for the drip tube. I dont know why, I know they are readily available and not very expensve and all that. I just dont like the idea of hacking up a good hard line, or paying someone else 20 bucks for a tube.

Anyway, I timed my engine last time the pump was out without any tube at all. It got me close and the engine ran well. Yesterday I pulled the pump again to fix a leaky gasket. This brings me to the reason for my post.

I decided to use an uncut hard line for the drip tube. Line 4(240D) fit really well. I put it on so that it ran back along the IP toward the firewall so the open end was directly above the steering gear. Put a little tray on top the steering gear to catch the flow. I found that it it behaved just like a drip tube. I could get the constant stream, the drip and no flow depending on where I moved the pump. I set it at the spot it dripped at the 1 per second.

It starts better and has more power on the high end than before so I must be closer to 24 now than I was with the other method I tried. The only way to really test this is for someone with a drip tube to use both and see if the results are the same. In any case, using a regular hard line gets you pretty darn close if not spot on.

I fail to see any difference between the two "drip tubes". In the case of the factory tube, it's short and sits directly above the pump. In you case, the tube is longer and allows you to use a catch pan. The only issue with yours is that the tube must fill up along it's horizontal length before you get the drip.

Otherwise they are identical.
