Check out the BMW's 330D!!
http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain.jsp?lnk=211&featureid=145&pageid=279
Wow if they were to bring this to the US I'd buy one! Especialy if they offered the sport package, I love the way the new 3's drive and handle with the sport package. Plus a 40mpg torque happy diesel; throw in all maintaince for 50k miles and I'm ready to sign! It really is annoying that we can't get any good high MPG diesels here because they are bad for the environment. But I can go out and buy a super charge H2 that gets 10 gallons to the mile and thats perfectly ok.

I agree, I got to close the door on someone's brand new 5series BMW the other day at work, and it felt and sounded like it was made of thick tin foil. Talk about flimsy. I prefer my tank-doors any day!! New MB's don't sound like the old ones, but they still have a VERY solid "THUD" when closing the door....worst I've seen is the doors on the big Ford and Chevy Trucks though, they flop in the wind, and the whole cab expands and contracts when you open/close the door....

Bah the new BMW's are built just fine. Much more solid running over rough roads then the old W126's.
The 3's are a bit small the rear seats get old after a couple of hours. But the fronts are ok. 370ft pounds of torque would be fun in traffic! Come on BMW bring the 330D to the US!

Hatteras, that's a hot car. The Sept '06 edition of C&D has a comparo road test of this car against the 330i. The two cars are virtually neck and neck when it comes to performance. However, the diesel goes 44% farther on a gallon of juice!

That car would get mid-high 30's for MPG's in real workd driving conditions - Keep in mind that in the UK they use imperial units, so their imperial gallon I believe is just a bit larger...Does that make sense?
5 Series w/ diesel = sex on 4 wheels
