Digital pics can make a crappy paint job look good. When ever I see careless overspray (check out the hood springs and window cowel), I wonder what else has been done for cosmetics. I always perfer maintaince records over shiny paint. Looks like they didn't spend much time cleaning the carpets.

Seller has good feedback. The most recent buyer complained something to the effect rebuilt (meant once salvaged but now fixed car) title. Seems they sold mostly cars, mostly happy customers. Keep in mind that they collect tax even if the buyer resides out of state and picks up the car rather than having it shipped. If I bought it, I would stay and drive the car there for at least the day. That way an existing problem would likely surface before the middle of the desert. At least you could get back to the dealer and use the rest of the round trip ticket worst case. (rt's are cheaper than one-ways) Diesel here in North Mi. is $3.10 ish, so getting it to NJ is about $300 in fuel. Not that any long distance buyer didn't already contemplate that, it just seems like there are nice MB diesels always popping up in N.J., perhaps not 116's though. I'm the wrong guy to offer opinion on buying the car. All my long distance ebay vehicles have been bad. Obviously some people have better luck.

I wonder if they allow an inspection. I could look at it since it's supposedly listed to be here in LA.

First off, are you willing to keep up and or repair and can afford to keep repairingto OEM condition a 26 year old luxury car with lots of goodies that like to fail?
The leather may look like Tex with shot horsehair. Looks like a 617 engine. Hookups are different than my '79. Rear floor mats are not stock. Pictures arn't telling alot. I want a view of the dash, jacking points and just in front of the rear wheels. Ask for a 0-60 MPH test and if between 14 & 18 seconds, ok. Now on that three speed trany????????????????????????????????? "Drive the car for a day..." Well, if the seller wants to pull a fast one, he can apply for a duplicate title on that day and your out $ and the car. I'd have the owner buy plates of if a dealer, hvae the proper dealer of temp. plates. That way you can drive without worry. Make sure to get insurance or you can get impounded in most states if stopped. $5K for 189K miles ... I think I'd have someone look at this car before putting $ down. On Ebay, if you back out on a deal, even if the seller lies, your out at least $250 (Ebay allways gets their $) plus your trip, read the small print. Ebay is risky. Many sellers claim "well it's in very good condition for a 30 year old car" well you want a running, choice 30 year old car not the average. Those rear mats worry me. Did the old ones rot from water ... not to uncommon in these cars. If so, what is the condition of the metal under the mats? Rear window seal? Ask about rust on the rear bumper to side fender/trunk bolt area. Can't see if the Becker is still there. Ask if everything vacuum driven works, all door locks, trunk lock, AC. Does the blower have low and high settings? Will the vacuum door locks work after engine has been off for 1/2 hour? Does seller have both types of keys? Tool kit? First aid kit? Those wheels look iffy but the camera angle created distortion and color. Verify the wheels on another site. Do all the windows work? The rear window overide switch on the console? Power antenna? Horn? For that kind of $, this car should be mint. When you get at the car, look at the small fuel filter. It should be clear. I forgot to check if this was a dealer sale. If not your state may not ok any tax paid and you may pay twice to save the hassle. AS you can tell, I also have learned a thing or two about ebay vehicle sales and now treat them like playing poker with the house always making $. |

Pedal to the floor if you COULD go anywhere on that freeway. It is near the airport....but you're right I would need BOTH guns.

Read the 'About Me'. This might be a repo car. If so, they know ziltch about 116 MBs and their ability to judge the car is iffy at best.
How much blow by comes out of the oil filler cap when removed and the engine reved? What noise does the trany make downshifting from 2nd to 1st? |

Hmm, are you sure that's the location? Is an appointment required or can I just drop in? I happen to drive right by there on the 110 freeway on the way home from work and would be there at 6:15-6:30 or so. I would rather not want to stay in that area after dark. If you can confirm that I can try to make it there today.
By the way they are 4 speeds. Only the 6.9 had the 3 speed as far as I know since the 360-400lbft of torque would trash the 4 speed autos. |

4 cyl. 5 cyl. and 6 cyl had four speed automatics
I think if it was 4,5 or 6 cylinders, it had a four speed automatic. Even the gassers had 4 speed autos. I road in a 280SLC and it had a 4 speed auto.

Andmoon, I went to the place to be a good forum participant so here's the scoop. I drove around downtown which the area is as I predicted....a toilet. I drove up and down Union looking for building numbers....the only thing NOT in Spanish was the Korean church which was surprisingly graffiti free! After nearly giving up since I didn't want to get lost in that area I saw 936 on the side of a multi level parking garage which had entrances blocked by people washing their cars in the building driveway. There wasn't any parking on the busy street and a lot of pedestrians. There wasn't a valet on duty at the rent by the hour motel either. Does this place really exist? It has no sign or business markings of any kind. VERY SUSPICIOUS!
So what's next? |
