Thumbs down Why did my tank just overflow??

I just spotted diesel fuel flowing from my overflow hose while parked. Sure enough, when I cracked the fuel cap diesel was overflowing. It was not overflowing earlier when I parked it. The tank was just filled days ago and it has not been driven.

By chance, this car also stalled on the highway days ago. I thought it was a clogged filter and maybe fungus (I have two 300Ds with fuel issues, so this is not a repost). Waiting for defung enzyme and new filters.

Could they be related? Tank vent problem? Can this really just start happening from thermal expansion? It's sunny and 80 degrees or so.

It's an 85 300Dt.

How long did you drive before you parked? Thermal expansion is a slight possability, but since diesel does not evaporate as readily a gas, I do not think that is it.

How full is your tank, and how are your filters?

maybe you pulled a vacuum from a clogged vent line and it popped in and you noticed the overflowing fuel from the sudden decrease in volume

Interesting. How do I make sure the vent line is not clogged? I dont even know where it is. I can tell you the overflow line aint clogged, thats for sure.

I was driven by my GF. It stalled. She thought maybe the tank was too low so filled it up. She struggled along for a mile or two after the fill up, then just towed the thing to the house. It was not leaking then. I moved it 20 feet. Not leaking. Then a day later, leaking.

I think my prefilter, in line, is pretty clogged to start with.

Where is the vent line?

she put diesel in right

but.. i too have an 85.. what you need to do.. is lay your head in front of the left rear tire (car off, parking brake on, chocked to be safe if you want) look to your right, you should a lil bell shapped thing coming off a metal line that leads to the fuel tank area.. that is the vent line valve that needs to be cleaned.. i removed mine, ran water through it, blew air through it with a straw and installed it back on the line and such..

if your clear prefilter is black you need to change fuel filters and note how long it takes for it to become clogged again.. if it clogs within a week or two then youve got a problem..ive had the same fuel filters since last october.. ill change them in october since they havent clogged at all or shown much crud in my tank.

also if she stalled because it ran out of fuel, then you have to reprime the system.. which isnt too hard with the hand primer mounted on the IP

Yeah, I got a good GF on the fuel choice side.

Thanks, I saw that thing. I'll check it out.

By "a problem" you mean a fungus right?
