Like the man said, check my sig.
I realize it's not a very accurate poll, but I think we'll roughly get the idea. Think of it as a diesel-choice census, rather than an actual vehicle count. So far I'm surprised to see so few W124's. I know there are more out there!

And they sold quite a few of them. There was a huge gas crisis in the early 80s and they were especially popular, even despite the GM diesel catastrophe that began in 1978.

I went W123 shopping in 1980, and in the Northern California area then all you could find were diesels- I wasn't sure whether I wanted a diesel or gas one or not.
I think I read somewhere that like 80% of MBs sold in the US in 1983 were diesel powered. The reason MB sold so many diesels was to avoid exhaust emission regulations in the US. The total emissions figure for all cars sold had to stay below a certain treshold. Rather than modify their gas engines, MB just sold a load of diesels which were not subject to emissions testing. It worked alright.
For the record, the last gasoline powered W123s offered in the states were the 1981 280E and 280CE. Any gasoline powered W123 after 1981, or any gasoline powered W123 wagon in the states is a grey market Euro.

[QUOTE=DieselAddict;1243727]Holy crap, that's a lot of miles! Does your Isuzu still have the original engine and tranny?

original engine, and 4 speed trans. have gone thru lots of tires, battries, brakes, 1 complete rebuilt front end, 4 u-joints, 3 alternaters, starter pulled twice and rebuilt average mpg for last few years is 36mpg. use to get 40mpg, but dropped with the last set of tires, goodyear (never again)

radio no longer works, odometer stopped and 491,000, but use a hand held gps to keep up with miles. never had a/c.

still runs but this is my fall, winter, spring daily. with no a/c.

bought 1981 mb 240d with only 170,000. Thinking if an isuzu could last 500,00 then this mb should last me a good 5 years.

haha, sounds logical enough. that's a good mileage figure for a 240, barely broken in!

Do you get to vote twice or more if you have multiple diesels?

Anyone here with a 190D or a W140 300SD or S350D? Those are the only two remaining US MB diesels (I think) that I wasn't able to squeeze into the poll. I suspect they may be hiding in the Others category.
