Mobil 1 0w-40

Is the Mobil 1 0w-40 diesel rated? It has an SM/CF rating. At $6.29/qt it's too expensive for summertime, but it would make sense for winter (when my car is not really driven anyway).

at the risk of starting a flame war, I'll say that if you're not going to drive it during the winter at all, that I'd use the cheapest oil I can.

Reason being is that you're going to start it a few times only. I'd want the contaiminents out for the long sit, then run the good stuff when you're driving it.

go to Mobil 1.com and look at what they recommend

For what I can remember here at work - that looks to be the oil I have in my v-12

As I recall, the 0w oils are too thin for the pressures encountered in a diesel.

Try Murrays. I think it's $5.79/qt.

I believe the Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck, Truck & SUV, and Delvac are the same oil. The only difference is the marketing attributed to each oil.

Correct. I just bought two gallons from the dealer for $5 a quart.

Guys, the newest "T&SUV" oil is 5W30 and carries no diesel ratings whatsoever. The new 5W40 oil is call Turbo Diesel Truck...for those of you who can find it.

Mobil 1 0W-40 full synthetic IS good for your diesel. It's what Mercedes Benz recommends for the 606 and is what I used without any problems. I got mine for $5.50 / quart at the dealership. I think it was $5.99 at PepBoys. You should be able to go 7,500 miles before an oil change which makes it cheaper than using dino.

Just noticed you had a 617. For some reason I thought you had a 606. I doubt it would make a difference but you may want to hear from people who made the switch in older cars.

You want to use 5W40 M1 for you 617. That's what the Mobil web site recommends, and it has a CI-1 Plus rating. IMHO, 0W40 is to thin for the 61X diesels.

Thanks. I thought it may be too thin. I would use the 5w40M1 all year if I could only find it.....

I have the same problem, my car was in the shop a couple of weeks ago so I had them put in M1 5W40 (from their 55 gallon drum). When I get home next week it will be due for another change so I will have to see if I can find it again.
