how to test for bad starter in 1983 240D?
I have an 83 240D that won't start up. I bought it after it was sitting for about 1 year. I tried a known good battery from my another 300D and it cranked a few times, albeit very weakly and then the starter would not crank any further. I boguht a new battery to replace the dead one in the car and it won't even crank once. I just hear one click when I fully turn the key.
Any way to test the starter? Could it be something else. FYI, I cleaned the battery terminal connections and the ground from the battery to passenger fire wall. |

You can take a hammer and give the starter a whack and then try starting it. I have done this numerous times on all kinds of cars and trucks . It will usually get it started but get the car home or to a repair shop. If it starts there is a good chance that the starter armature has a bad spot.

I'll try a hammer in the morning.
I also tried the following this evening... external starter button switch connected to terminals on starter...it spun freely but no catch jumped violet wire in sheath in front of battery to positive battery terminal...starter would lurch once but not catch I also plan to check the ground wire from starter to chassis. Btw, I noticed the negative and positive cables got real warm when I tried the violet wire jump and using the external starter bump switch...is that normal? |

when it was cranking, was it cranking really slow??? like an old farm tractor. when i first got my 83 240D it sounded like an old tractor, everyone said that the battery was going dead, then one day last winter, the combination of a worn lout starter and no glow plugs cause the starter to completley die. that was a fun replacement, replacing it in a parking lot when it was snowing/ and icing and was 10 deg. but when i put the new starter in, i didnt know that it was suppose to crank that fast

Thank god for this thread! I've had a W123 200D (yes, the baby diesel engine) sat outside my house for six months awaiting work. When I parked her up, she started fine, but now, with a fresh battery (90Ah) I dont even get a click from the solenoid. Shorting out the big solenoid/starter links makes the starter run healthy enough (although the bendix doesnt engage without the solenoid), but Im unsure how to check whether it's the solenoid or the starter switch - how do I bypass the ignition to get the solenoid to start?
Bear in mind that Im terrible with electrics - I could do with a walkthrough... Last edited by Grrrmachine; 08-19-2006 at 06:11 PM. |
