Too bad, it was a pretty good example of a 124. But for 695 pounds, something big must have needed attention. At least it wasn't a 300TD

Used cars, especially old ones, are RIDICULOUSLY low costing. I know someone who picke dup a 300TE in England for 550 pounds. It was in good condition, too!

Didnt understand some of the tests.
If the engine was bulletproof why didnt they shoot at it with a gun? Dynamite isnt a bullet ![]() That wear and tear test track made sense on how well the car would hold up being that it is 16yrs old. a monster truck....well a litte much but the car wasnt fully crushed which tells me the body is tough. The cannon....i mean come on! were not in the middle ages...since when has anyone been fired at by one in a benz recenetly? ![]()

The car inspections in Europe are much more meticulous than here. In Germany I know they will even check for wear on your CLUTCH!

I cant believe they did that to an old benz!
But wow did it hold up or what?! I always knew the body structure was amazing, this really proves it. Although this is apparent by the fact that my 87 300D with 250k miles on it has doors that close better than my 2001 Ford. Now give me that baseball bat and let me beat 5th gear producers with it.

Since that wagon was running on a "G" reg. number plate, and those came out from 08-'89 though 09-'90, so it'd be a 1990, just like the thistle green London Bomb Car at the Tiger Club.
A '90 gas W124 wagon with 167k is a deal at under 700 pounds, too. Especially with a valid MOT and tax disc on it. That's about $1,400 for a really nice car in good shape What a waste to destroy it like that. Kind of pi$$es me off, silly gits killing it. Oh well, it proved the point of the tests. Went down with guns blazing. That program has been called lame compared to Clarkson and Top Gear (and pretty much everyone else.)

Sad to see that the BBC has finally sunk to the level of American broadcasting but then after 12 years of airing "Larry Springer" I suppose British viewers expect the bar to lower. Honestly, any number of people should be shot for perpetrating such an egregiously wasteful act.

As soon as the baseball bat came out, I turned it off. So sad.
![]() Yes chaps, lets go around touting the quality of the car quite professionally and then proceed to slowly destroy the car, with no knowledge gained, because the record of durability on the cars as been well documented and well stated...ahem...jolly good..here here... hip hip hurrah! BOOM! SMASH! ... Well that was quite a show... ![]() And I thought America had an abundance of stupidity... Well then... ![]() |

Fifth Gear is not a BBC programme. It is a Channel Five programme, funded by advertising. Lots of people in the UK were pretty annoyed about that piece. It was a blatent ripoff of Top Gear, who by the way do a much much better job of trashing old cars. The car itself wasn't in good condition - no way. For that price it would have been an insurance write-off, a rustheap, or needing major engine/electrical work. So fret not. IIRC it even had chrome wheelarches, a sure sign it was a a heap of rust. |
