If you are refering to the part about marking the flywheel before removal ... the flywheel wasn't on this engine when purchased..... came to me in a box

Mark can be VERY difficult to see...

Look for a tiny 'o' on the mating-flange....

IF there is any crud or surface-rust on the parts it can be near damnd impossible to see those marks...
(I REALLY wih they were better marked, Took me ages to find 'em!)

Careful cleaning with steel-woll I recommend, wet/dry paper is Too rough and could remove 'em....

In the few swappings of FWs and cranks I have done with 616s, some were not marked in fact most were not, which is great because if the FW and crank are not marked they can be swapped as both were balanced independently. I have had no problems using those guide lines with 616s. Dont know for sure about your 617 but I would guess its the same deal.

I've recently done the front crankshaft seal on my OM617 and the timing marks were difficult to see - however they were there - on the balancer bit that is located in place with the two dowels.

When I cleaned it up (I used brake cleaner) it was a metal colour. The second part of the balancer is black - this bit doesn't have the timing marks. This does, however, have a circle or dot on its surface just next to where the final bolt goes into the crankshaft.

Does this help? If you need a photograph I might be able to dig one out - PM me.

I have had 240, 300 sticks and autos apart and they all had marks. The marks are tiny chistle marks not circles, just a light stamp. Clean the parts with brake cleaner and get a magnifying glass and you will see them.

LED flashlights are super for finding them. Wet it with brake fluid or WD 40.

You might consider marking them with a high temp white paint dot for the future too.
