SDL on Ebay

Thoughts on this one? No way in the world would I ever buy from Ebay without a thorough in-person check (as I would do on any other car ) but at this point just trying to gauge market value.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-350SD-Turbo-Diesel-1991_W0QQitemZ270023843115QQihZ017QQcategoryZ6330QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Gotta ask for service records - ANYONE can SAY a car was "meticulously maintained."

I don't understand the "A/C blows cold but should be checked." Huh? I don't know what that means - does is work or does it NOT work??

Obviously need documentation of the replacement of the rod-bender. Are the replacement motors subject to the same problem?

I call that a seller's disclaimer. One could guess there is a leak in the system the seller topped it off knowing the leak was never found/repaired. That statement is much like it's cousin - AC doesn't work, but just needs freon.

Look at that clean engine.
Are those C Class Wheels?

Oil pressure looks kinda low.

So Far (touch wood) I have had only the smallest of problems dealing with E-Bay(about 3 dozen times). If I hadn't read here, of all the rip-off artists on E-bay; I could easily have been sucked in by my eagerness to buy an MB. I guess my positive experiences are because I was mostly dealing on cheaper items, and the jerks mostly want to rip off on bigger ticket items like cars.
You sure have to learn about checking out 'feedback', and checking out the value of the items that they earned their possitive feedbacks from. Such as guys who have many possitives from selling items under $10, and now they are selling a car.

Market is inflated currently on ebay, great to sell... not to buy.

Hmm - back on the topic:

Any thoughts on the car itself????

I am fully aware of the risk/reward tradeoff on Ebay and apologies for bringing it up as it's not the point of the thread.

This auction has been reposted at least three times for this car that I have seen. This throws up a Red flag to me if I was buying, But in fairness there are a lot of flakey buyers who dont complete the deal also. Good Luck,Johnny

I, too, have seen this car for auction on eBay at least once before. That is not necesarily a bad sign, though - just another reason to be careful.

Buying off ebay is high risk. You can minimize those risks, and if you're going to buy that way, then I suggest you call the Seller and ask him a bunch of questions. Then call him back and ask him more questions. Judge him and his personality by his responses, then use that knowledge to find out if he's representing the car properly. There are honest people on ebay, but they're getting rarer it seems.

I've always thought this: just because you win the auction, doesn't mean you're forced to buy the car - you ARE obligated, but if the car isn't what he says it is, then don't pay for it. Pick the car up yourself, so you can make sure the car is what he says it is.

Not sure I'd pay top dollar for any 350 diesel, though. And yes, ebay is top dollar for MB diesels right now.

I like the 91s as you get the latest features, I'm not scared of the 3.5 as I'd just slap in a 3.0. I don't like the 400E wheels on the W126s, look weird.

But again, no telling what's hidden within the auction.

If you're going to plunk $10k for it, have it inspected by a shop and go look YOURSELF. No one can tell you what you see with your own eyes...

First time I see SLS in a SWB US W126.

What's the switch below the ashtray? City/highway horn?

Maybe AC blows cold but not out the right vents.

If someone contacts the owner, please ask for the engine serial number. Should be on the horizontal surface of the block above the IP. Hard to see the 603970-12 but should be easy to see the last 6 digits. Could even be a 603971 block.

I think a rear sunshade.

I'm installing the SLS on my SDL, already started installing parts.
